Description: NAVY SWITCHGEAR AND COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS DIVISION P OSITION DESCRIPTION Position Title: Fitter/Welder SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED Under general direction of supervisor, performs all operations to lay out, set up, erect, fit and weld large structural assemblies and cabinets for a wide variety of panel boards, switchgear and other electrical/mechanical products.

Layout and position structural members on floor bed-plates, allowing for expansion and contraction of metals, and clamp components into position holding squareness and parallelism to close fractional tolerances.

Tack, weld or braze members into place using hand electric arc, oxy-acetylene or inert gas welding techniques.

Burn or drill openings, burn off parts, plug and patch defects and clean and dress welds as necessary.

Use hand tools, scale, tape measure, fixtures, rotary positioners, and prescribed welding equipment. Select proper size and type of electrode or rod; set current density, and regulate gas pressure.

Follow complex welding prints and established procedures for all operations.

Work requires considerable physical exertion, often in difficult or cramped working positions.

Repair frames, panels, switchboards and related hardware in the assembly area when required.

Regularly direct lower rated men assisting on the job or help other welders with heavy work.

Operate chipper, grinder, or sander and make welding repairs to fixture.

When necessary, will also be required to do finish grinding and spot welding operations.

Welder will be required to weld to MIL-Spec.248-C and welder qualification procedure 8.1.1.7. Observe all safety regulations as required.

Train lower rated employees.

Refer all unusual conditions to supervisor.
