Summary You will perform work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, walkways, exterior structures, campgrounds, buildings and related utilities and operate light duty motor vehicles weighting up to 10,000 pounds. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. Responsibilities Perform carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools on such tasks as replacing broken planks on picnic tables; repairing siding or wooden chairs with nails, reapplying/repairing molding, or installing shelving, signage or items like whiteboards. Repairs minor wood structures, such as park benches, waste baskets, and signs. Performs simple operational maintenance on heating, venting and air conditioning equipment by cleaning out chiller condenser tubing, cleaning the cooling tower, inspecting and replacing filters. Excavates broken water valves and sprinkler heads and Tightens simple connections to stop leaks. Prepares ground to lay sod or plants flowers and shrubs using provided and simple drawings. Assists in planting, transplanting, fertilizing, mulching, watering and pruning under specific instructions and under supervision. Assists with various landscape activities such as plant propagation, survival, herbicide spraying and other routine maintenance operations. Cleans and prepares buildings, walls, trim, and floor surfaces for painting by sanding, scraping, or wire brushing. Inspects, maintains, and replaces light bulbs in a variety of fixtures both inside and outside. Complies with stipulations in lighting plans as applicable (e.g., museums, displays, special applications). Incumbent removes damaged portions of walls or other similar architectural features in preparation for repair of damage. Mows lawns using large, complex industrial-type (walking and riding type) power mowers and small domestic power mowers. Performs routine maintenance and repair on equipment. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. Emergency/Essential Personnel position. If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. You will be placed in a pay status and can expect to work a minimum of 20 pay periods NTE a maximum of 25 pay periods. Season is an estimate. Physical Demands: The incumbent may lift, carry, set up and handle tools, parts, equipment and materials that weigh up to or over 50 pounds unassisted. May work from ladders, platforms, scaffolds and perform work or repairs in hard to reach places and positions. Requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling and climbing in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Required to operate standard hand and power tools. Working Conditions: Work is performed both inside and outside. Incumbent is subject to climatic extremes in all weather conditions. Work conditions may be dusty, greasy and noisy. There is exposure to fumes and the possibility of electric shock, bruises, burns, scrapes and cuts. The work requires frequent special care to avoid injuries. To reduce the dangers, the incumbent is required to follow prescribed safety practices such as wearing specified trades and craft protection clothing (i.e., hard-hats, gloves, safety shoes and glasses, ear plugs, respirators and rain gear).
