Job Description

The First Judicial District (FJD) Network Engineer is responsible for protecting data, software, and hardware by coordinating, planning, and implementingnetworkprotocols in accordance with FJD policies. Responsible for troubleshooting, diagnosing, and resolving hardware, software, and othernetworkand system problems. Replacing faultynetworkhardware components when required. Network and security support related to design, configuration, installation, maintenance, and documentation of FJD’s network infrastructure. This position will provide support for network and server operations from Tier 2 service desk issues, through network oversight and troubleshooting, along with delegated server operations related to our virtual and physical environment.

This position reports to the FJDDeputy CIO.

Essential Functions

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Configuring, deploying, and administering FJD wireless infrastructure
  • Administering and supporting enterprise firewall solutions
  • Designing, configuring, and deploying routing and switching solutions for Local Area and Wide Area Networks (LAN/WAN) in a large and complex city-wide campus
  • Managing data circuits
  • Administering site to site Virtual Private Networks (VPN), extranets, and direct connects
  • Supporting Unified Communications team during VOIP deployment
  • Developing comprehensive network design documentation
  • Offering technical leadership to a team of network engineers
  • Advising and assisting during network and security hardware purchasing, inventory management, and licensing.
  • As our physical environment expands into a virtualized server environment, expansion of duties for understanding and supporting the virtual and offsite locations, including disaster recovery site.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge or practical experience in Networking (routing, switching, etc.), TCP/IP protocols, systems security (Unix, Windows, database, patch management, etc.)
  • Knowledge of hardware and software management and configuration
  • Knowledge of network application managers
  • Knowledge of IT security controls (firewalls, IDS, IPS, Proxy, Antivirus, etc.,)
  • Knowledge of shell script, Perl, etc.

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL STANDARDS

Moderate lifting (up to 20 lbs) of computers and printers, cable installation. Must be able to perform physical activities associated with installation and maintenance of computer and network systems. Ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

1. Successful completion of a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited college or university with major course work in Computer Science, Information Technology or a closely related field. A minimum of 5 years’ experience with FJD network and systems to include the below range of subject matters:

o Router and Switch configuration

o Auditing in IP addresses.

o Arranging scheduled upgrades.

o Investigating faults in the network.

o Improving the efficiency of current networks

o Upgrading network equipment and data servers.

o Designing and implementing new network solutions.

o Linking with service desk engineers and project managers.

o Maintaining IT security systems and administering firewalls.

o Solving network problems and maximize network performance.

2. After meeting minimum standards, successful completion of a panel review.

As FJD IT is a 24/7/365 operation, it is anticipated that support will be needed during non-business hours. Whenever possible, scheduled work for after hours will be identified in advance. However, there may be times when emergency or critical systems require work including during inclement weather, holidays, night, and weekends. As an essential employee, long shifts or unscheduled work may be required.

Normal schedule will fall within business hours of the Court, unless otherwise identified above.

5. Ability to perform the essential functions of a position in this class.
