Job Description

We havean exciting opportunity for three experienced Journals Portfolio Managers to join us, across three subject areas.The Portfolio Managers will be responsible for the commercially effective management and development of Open Access journals, including new launches, across our Humanities and Social Science (HSS) Journals portfolio.

There are three open positions in1) Education; 2) Humanities, Media and the Arts; and 3) Social Sciences. Reporting to the relevant Head of Portfolio, you will bring additional OA expertise and publishing flair to the team, developing and managing OA journals as well as supporting best practice in OA publishing across the wider HSS team.

The role would suit someone who is flexible and confident, able to think innovatively about publishing, demonstrate commercial astuteness, and has an ability to work in a matrix organization, building strong working relationships with internal and external colleagues.

What you'll be doing:

  • Create and deliver plans to grow, develop and maximise the profitability of Open Access journals in your portfolio working with the Head of Portfolio, Portfolio Development Specialist, and the Open Access Team
  • Manage a journals portfolio to an agreed level of revenue and profitability, exceeding/meeting targets and objectives
  • Pro-actively manage the article pipeline to deliver against agreed service levels, collaborating with peer review and production colleagues, contributing to reviewer selection, engaging with new services for pipeline management, and influencing new practice
  • Proactively commission content, building a network of contacts and working with the Editorial teams to build and deliver on commissioning plans to drive articles, special issues and commissioned content to your journals
  • Recruit editorial teams and board members and work with these teams to manage the strategic development and operational efficiency of your Open Access journals portfolio
  • Develop new open access propositions based on strong market research and best practice approaches
  • Identify opportunities to flip existing hybrid titles, and develop best practice processes and workflows to effect the transition to Open Access
  • Develop and share best practice around successful open access publishing across the HSS team
  • Support and contribute to Open Research initiatives and best practice across the HSS team
  • Foster in-depth and long-term relationships with current and potential publishing partners in order to maintain and protect current portfolio and create opportunities for further acquisitions
  • Maintain a strong external focus e.g. attending conferences, editorial board meetings etc. creating profile and relevant networks to increase subject and customer knowledge and understanding
  • Build, maintain and share thorough knowledge of market need and competitor activity across the HSS group to inform decisions on new journals and existing journal development

Qualifications

What we’re looking for:

  • Experience of managing an Open Access portfolio of Journals to meet business growth objectives/or equivalent
  • Track record of substantial success in OA publishing
  • Motivation and aptitude to work with colleagues across the business to drive best practice
  • Strong HSS subject matter knowledge and proven experience in developing HSS Journals is ideal
  • Experience of working with internal departments, publishing partners and Editors-in-Chief, Associate Editors and Section Editors to effectively manage copy flow
  • Proven experience of interpreting and applying insight from data on submissions, accepts, rejects and other pipeline and financial data
  • Resilience, self-reliance and resourcefulness; someone who is willing to go the extra mile to drive customer and commercial value
  • Analytical thinking and logical responses under pressure
  • Solution finding and decision making
  • Excellent communication skills, oral, presentation and written
  • Strong team working skills, ability to collaborate, work with others, share knowledge and best practice to drive value
  • Willingness and motivation to travel to and participate in external events and networks
