The Mellon College of Science (MCS) is home to four departments and many programs and research centers that cross disciplines. We approach scientific problems from fresh angles using creative interdisciplinary approaches while drawing on our departmental strengths in the core sciences. MCS faculty members are nationally and internationally recognized for their research in a variety of fields, including polymer science, cosmology, mathematical finance and neuroscience.The Department of Chemistry is seeking an ambitious Senior Laboratory Assistant who is people oriented, organized and would enjoy supporting undergraduate students in Chemistry throughout their Carnegie Mellon education. In this role, you will work closely with the Director of Undergraduate Studies and Laboratories to support students in their academic program, facilitating their experience in our undergraduate laboratory experience. You will collaborate with multiple partners including Chemistry faculty, staff and other campus partners.

Core responsibilities include:

Working as part of a team to supervise the daily scientific and technical operations of the undergraduate Chemistry labs, and the Chemistry department's scientific instrumentation and chemical storerooms.

Ensure that lab spaces are kept in excellent working order by maintaining a clean and orderly space with an appropriate inventory of contents, reporting any maintenance issues to the appropriate person and routine preventative maintenance to lab safety equipment.

Assisting with the preparation of chemical and equipment orders with one larger order placed during the summer months and between semesters, and smaller orders as needed throughout the academic year.

Maintaining an accurate chemical inventory using the university approved ChemTracker system as well as performing physical inventories during the summer months.

Coordinating the safe receipt, storage and handling of chemicals, including hazardous materials, laboratory equipment and small instrumentation and basic laboratory supplies.

Assisting in lab set-up prior to student arrival on a semesterly and daily basis. Such as making locker assignments, nametags, ensuring lockers are fully stocked with clean, usable equipment, personal protective equipment is available and special items as needed are set up in the space.

Helping to ensure that all student work in the labs is executed in a safe and orderly manner.

Working directly with faculty and teaching assistants to assist students throughout class periods. This can include collecting papers, recordkeeping generally via computer, handing out and collecting equipment and ensuring appropriate cleanliness and storage conditions for equipment loaned and collected and dispensing chemicals.

Assisting faculty and staff, as requested, with classroom activities, outreach program and summer courses, which might include photographic or video recording of activities.Flexibility, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within MCS. Excellent organizational and planning skills with strong attention to detail.

Ability to work independently and be an integral member of a team.

Ability to multitask and deliver work according to fixed deadlines.

Ability to manage recurring responsibilities with a high degree of independence and solving problems with a professional attit de.

Ability to use software tools to maintain accurate and detailed records.

Sensitivity to maintaining and safeguarding confidentiality regarding student and department information.

Ability to lift 30 pounds and perform physical work in the receipt and storage of equipment, chemicals and supplies and loading and unloading student lockers.

Qualifications:

High school education minimally required with relevant associate's degree preferred or relevant experience.

Some chemistry knowledge is helpful but not required.

Must be able to complete at an acceptable level the required university training in lab safety and maintain appropriate first aid certification.

Digital literacy with a basic Office suite of products (word processor, database management), web-based searching and email.
