Job Description

We have a fantastic new opportunity for a Head of Research Integrity& Ethicsto join their Publishing Ethics & Integrity team. This senior level role, reporting to the Director of Publishing Ethics and Integrity, is responsible for developing and delivering the research integrity strategy in ensuring publishing best practice, by providing expert advice, support and resources to the Journals Editorial teams on publishing ethics, peer review and research integrity matters and ensuring agility to respond to ethical considerations driven by the evolving global research and publishing landscape.

What you will be doing:

  • Work closely with the Director of Publishing Ethics and Integrity to characterise and monitor emerging trends in research ethics, peer review and integrity issues across the publishing industry, in order to drive, refine and adapt editorial policies and improve processes, resources and training.
  • Lead, coach and line manage the Research Integrity Managers.
  • Drive knowledge exchange within the team in order to enhance the teams function as a centre of excellence in research integrity matters across all disciplines
  • Competently track and report on team performance metrics using appropriate tools to identify where improvements and/or additional resources are required
  • Oversee tracking of ethics case trends across journals and distil key points from the data on a regular basis to highlight areas which require attention.
  • Set up systems and processes to monitor compliance through regular audits of journals and articles for early intervention on issues.
  • Work collaboratively with all colleagues across the business to identify and create continuous improvement solutions and training and engagement opportunities to ensure compliance to editorial standards and policies
  • Support colleagues across the business on ethics and integrity matters with the ability to confidently advise on complex ethics cases, with the aim of averting or managing crises
  • Pro-actively assess how different industry initiatives (e.g. open research, evolving peer review models, new research technologies/methodologies) can introduce challenges to the research integrity and publishing ethics landscape
  • Act as a policy and initiative champion with internal stakeholders to ensure buy-in and support across other departments
  • Drive an engagement strategy to inform and collaborate with colleagues and external stakeholders on editorial policy and research integrity best practice to build understanding and engagement and drive compliance.
  • Build an active profile in the industry through proactive engagement with relevant organisations and with researchers working in ethics and integrity to build and maintain a reputation as a publisher of quality, ethical research
  • Represent T&F at external events or as part of key cross-industry working groups, to ensure T&F is up to date/leading the field in key areas.
  • Represent and support the Director of Publishing Ethics and Integrity as required.

Qualifications

  • Experience in research in a STM or HSS discipline
  • Substantial editorial experience in assessing scholarly manuscripts for quality, research ethics and integrity of content
  • Experience in development and implementation of research ethics and integrity policies and processes.
  • Substantial experience in handling and advising on a variety of complex and sensitive research ethics and integrity cases
  • In-depth knowledge of global research ethics guidelines and infrastructures, and different types of research study designs
  • Excellent understanding of publication ethics standards and guidelines
  • Broad interest in research and how this is evolving globally
  • Experienced line manager with strong coaching and mentoring skills
  • Strong strategic thinking, decision-making, analysis and project management skills.
  • Strong ability to work to tight deadlines and prioritize competing tasks effectively
  • Strong relationship building and team working skills, able to work collaboratively across the business and at all levels
  • Strong communication skills, able to build clarity, understanding and engagement with audiences at all levels
  • Excellent ability to effectively represent T&F on public platforms and cross-industry associations

  • This role is based in Philadelphia, although remote candidates will be considered for the ideal candidate on the east coast of the US. The east coast allows the most overlapping hours to work with colleagues across the UK and wider Europe

  • Domestic and international travel to T&F offices may be required
