IT Ops Systems Administrator

Description:We are looking for an experienced IT Ops System Administrator to support our growing set of web-based and desktop Ocean Science products along with our critical back-end systems. You will be part of a growing engineering team and not only be responsible for infrastructure support of our existing core products, but a key member of the delivery team for new products.This role is responsible for configuration of new hardware and software solutions, both on-premise and cloud-based technologies, primarily in AWS and MS Azure. The role requires support of Linux systems, scripting experience preferably Bash, Python and PowerShell, and an understanding of the software development lifecycle with a focus on transitioning software applications into production following DevOps principles. This role is ideal for a System Administrator who is interested in growing into a DevOps Engineer role.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assisting in the ongoing deployment of server hardware, software, and applications; providing technical support, troubleshooting, diagnosis and problem resolution
  • Building and supporting cloud-based software systems to support a modern and resilient infrastructure in AWS and Azure
  • Providing Unix support for both physical and virtual servers
  • Analyzing, supporting, and administering existing systems and providing recommendations for performance and stability
  • Applying operating system updates, patches, and configuration changes
  • Diagnosing and resolving system issues regarding server, internet, VPN, storage, and network, during and outside of normal business hours
  • Assisting end users with desktop issues for both Mac and Windows operating systems
  • Support the development teams by creating secure virtual test environments
  • Work with project team leads and architects to transition development solutions into service
  • Follow a security by design framework and continue to maintain applications and systems following appropriate best practices
  • Develop and maintain IT Operations procedural documentation
  • Implementing cloud system best-practices such as monitoring, logging, automation, and improving system resiliency
  • Configuring and managing CI/CD pipelines

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technology related field
  • 5+ years IT Operations experience, working in mid-large size enterprise
  • Administration experience in Wintel and Linux virtualized environments (VMWare and Hyper-V, Centos\RedHat)
  • Basic understanding of container technology (ideally Docker)
  • Great written and oral communication skills

Preferred Skills:
  • Knowledge of cloud services (AWS or Azure)
  • Cloud experience: monitoring cloud-native production systems and transitioning services from server to cloud hosted
  • Familiarity configuring and deploying NGINX
  • A recognized IT service management certification such as ITIL or experience working within an ITIL framework
  • DevOps experience working with software teams to debug issues ranging from network infrastructure to end-user application functionality
  • Familiarity with CI/CD tools, processes, and configurations
  • Experience building, tagging, scanning, and updating Docker containers
  • Managing container orchestration tools such as Docker Swarm or cloud-native tools like AWS ECS or Azure Container Services
  • Working with cloud-native technologies and paradigms such as autoscaling, virtual networking, and serverless architecture
  • Experience configuring, administrating, and debugging Kubernetes clusters
