Job Description

The Operational Due Diligence Manager/Director will be responsible for organizing and assisting in operational due diligence engagements on external investment managers and investment partners across a variety of asset classes. The Operational Due Diligence program, which is aligned with the firm-wide Enterprise Risk Management framework, adopts a risk-based approach that is consistent with the three Lines of Defence model to report on operational risk factors associated with a fund investment, or engagement of service providers.

This dynamic role will be based in Hong Kong. It includes international travel, will provide opportunities to plan onsite visits, engage in operational risk discussions with C-suite personnel and provide exposure and insight into a variety of asset classes, fund strategies and operating models. The Manager/Director will report to the Managing Director, Operational Risk, which is a part of CPPIB’s Enterprise Risk team.

Position Description

  • Manage and execute operational due diligence engagements through conducting on-site or virtual meetings by assessing an external investment managers operational infrastructure and provide feedback where applicable to offer solutions to help mitigate risks.
  • Interface with internal and external partners to stay informed of regulatory developments in APAC.
  • Assist with the rollout of the operational due diligence program in APAC.
  • Prepare clear and comprehensive due diligence reports in accordance with deadlines and provide detailed analysis of reports to stakeholders.
  • Identify process gaps, control weaknesses and recommend improvements
  • Be a trusted partner that provides sound operational due diligence practices and works closely with internal stakeholders to ensure that priorities are agreed, and investment deadlines are met.
  • Assist with substantiating that the operational due diligence process consistently reflects best practices and any key industry topics are incorporated.
  • Contribute to strong working relationships within functional teams across the organization.
  • Assist Enterprise Risk team in performing risk and control assessments of HK operations, consistent with the board approved Integrated Risk Framework.
  • Work collaboratively with local core services functions and investment departments
  • Contribute to ad-hoc enterprise wide projects and support other risk initiatives in the region as required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 8+ years of relevant work experience in the areas of due diligence; accounting, valuations, compliance, investment operations, information technology; preferably at an alternative investment manager, consulting firm, Big Four audit firm or a sell-side institution such as a prime brokerage.
  • Knowledgeable in a wide range of asset classes, financial instruments and alternative investment strategies not limited to hedge, private equity and credit, real estate and infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of external investment managers operational frameworks and best practices
  • Understanding of industry standards and best practices relating to internal controls and procedures, risk management, operational due diligence and investment regulations.
  • Strong English communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills, including ability to work cooperatively with many different stakeholders located in multiple jurisdictions. Chinese language skills would be a strong asset.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment; a self-starter, pro-active and motivated to create positive change
  • Comfortable with organizing team members with various levels of work and ad-hoc projects in a timely manner.
  • Proficient in MS Office suite of applications.
  • Available for travel (post pandemic) – expected travel is approximately 5-15%.
