Description

Job Description: Candidate will assume a significant role in the development of Leidos and US Navy maritime autonomy and the technical domain spanning autonomous marine platforms and ocean survey. This will include groundbreaking work to enable both existing and purpose built craft with an autonomous ocean survey capability. The candidate will join an established team of developers, engineers and marine systems operators whose portfolio of programs has been growing and participate in team efforts supporting the U.S. Government and commercial clients in marine system design, development, testing, integration, documentation and maintenance. The work is an excellent entrance into "Blue Economy" technical development and is based in Newport, RI, conveniently located between Boston and New York City with amazing quality of life opportunities.

Additionally, the candidate will work on problems of moderate scope supporting requirements definition, design, development, and testing of integrated oceanographic and geophysical data acquisition, and data processing systems. Typical sensors integrated in the shipboard environment include positioning systems, vertical reference systems, multi-beam sonar systems, side-scan sonar systems, and sound velocity profiling sensors. As part of the software engineering team the candidate may be required to support at-sea operations and potentially travel, but only after a period of indoctrination, development and interface with customers and teammates.

Applicants will be subject to a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for obtaining a U.S. Government Security clearance to the level of SECRET. This is a great way to add classified work to you experience portfolio.

The candidate may direct a small team of other engineers in task-specific work goals.

REQUIED EDUCATION/SKILLS: Requires BS degree and 2 - 4 years of prior relevant experience or Masters with less than 2 years of prior relevant experience. Candidates should have at least three years experience developing software using the C, or C programming languages on Linux or Windows operating systems. Candidates must have a strong background in computer-based system integration and networking and be capable of supporting software quality initiatives. This would include some exposure to either Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI®) or ISO familiarity. Candidates with an interest in working in a team environment, solving complex problems associated with sensor data integration, data fusion, and information extraction will excel and grow and be afforded increasing opportunities and leadership positions.

DESIRED SKILLS: The work requires experience with ANSI C programming language on Windows and/or Linux operating systems. Previous experience in the ocean sciences field is beneficial, but not a requirement. Previous experience with user interface design, object oriented software design and development, and/or testing is also desirable. Specific software development experience using Qt, OpenGL, Java, X Windows, TCL/TK, is a plus.

This is a great opportunity for a developer to grow in the burgeoning field of marine and maritime autonomy with a company leading ocean autonomy efforts for several important government agencies. The successful candidate will also gain in experience with software development processes, classified software development efforts and coordinating across a broader team to achieve Leidos and customer goals.
