Overview

Our Custody Officer provides security functions within and around the perimeter of the facility. This position is responsible for maintaining proper security and safety standards for all patients. It makes security checks and inspections of the entire working environment and corrects or reports to the proper authority all shortcomings and deficiencies. The position must prepare written reports of daily activities, disciplinary infractions, accidents and incidents. It must develop and maintain a professional rapport with all patients, supervisors and other employees in the working environment.

Qualifications

Education:
  • High School diploma or equivalent

Experience:
  • Prefer one (1) year work experience in correctional, security or police work
  • In addition, must meet any facility/state specific educational/training requirements

Licenses/Certifications:
  • Must possess a valid driver's license specific to the state of employment
Responsibilities

  1. Maintains security of an assigned post (as defined by the facility), remaining alert at all times and taking the necessary action to prevent escapes. Monitors patient activities and intervening as needed to control disruptive and/or violent behaviors.
  2. Monitors and controls all communication systems, surveillance systems, emergency signal systems, including but not limited to: gates and doors, weapons, fire alarm system, thermal detection system, electronic locking system, closed circuit television system, computer systems, perimeter-alert system, public address (PA) system, two-way radio system, and mechanical restraining devices.
  3. Conducts formal and informal counts of patients and reports any discrepancies to the appropriate personnel.
  4. Observes and monitors patient behaviors inside and outside of the Facility. Identifying potential security breaches and implementing necessary safety precautions.
  5. Responds to emergency calls in patient areas to de-escalate aggressive behaviors, control fights and riots, prevent escapes and assists clinical staff to prevent harm or injury from violent patients utilizing established aggression control techniques. Participates in searching patient areas for contraband and other unauthorized items.
  6. Controls and monitors all individuals entering and exiting the Facility grounds, verifying provided identification from visitors and conducts searches, as required, of all persons belongs and vehicles.
  7. Continuously monitors and inspects the Facility environment for escape risks and/or hazardous conditions. This includes; fences, doors, windows, ceilings, etc. In the event of an escape, searches will be performed beyond the facility grounds when prompted, returning an escapee to the Facility if applicable.
  8. Responds to patient problems, complaints and needs.
  9. Ensures patient assignments are carried out; monitors all patient activities ensuring order and control.
  10. Prepares and submits required reports without error in accordance with facility policy and time frames.
  11. Makes sanitation and safety inspections of facility and contents, grounds and vehicles, and corrects or reports shortcomings and deficiencies.
  12. Ensures patients movement is in compliance with facility policy.
  13. Maintains safety and sanitation standards.
  14. Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.
  15. Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.
  16. Must be alert at all times; pay close attention to details.
  17. Must be able to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis.
  18. Perform other duties as assigned.
