The role of a Senior Environmental Scientist involves delivering discipline-specific outputs on both local and international projects, ensuring effective input from others. Responsibilities include working on detailed or routine environmental assignments such as studies, assessments, drawings, and reports. Key tasks include EIA/ESIA development, report writing,  data review, supervision and mentoring, coordination, and acquiring baseline documentation. Additionally, the role involves signing local reports, documents, and forms as a registered Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) and leading Public Participation/Stakeholder Engagement. Importantly, this role requires interfacing with local clients and competent authorities, as well as collaborating with internal AECOM teams globally.

Technical Excellence

The successful applicant will work on a range of projects diverse in type and scale located in South Africa and abroad and will be expected to:

- Work effectively with international teams in a virtual environment.

- Become familiar with environmental legislation, triggers and procedures in international territories and countries.

- Coordinate small - mid-size project teams of discipline-led  Engineer/Environmental Scientist/ Environmental Managers.

- Prepare project deliverables that are reviewed by senior team members.

- Provide specialised technical input into studies and assessments for the particular area of expertise and identify discrepancies in results.

- Follow existing or develops new environmental assessment procedures to facilitate high-quality, cost-effective work by self and others.

- Participate in and creates an interdisciplinary review of project deliverables, including modelling reviews and laboratory analysis.

- Gather and correlate environmental information and data using well-defined methods.

- Prepare technical specifications and performs work under the agreed-upon budget and schedule with little supervision. 

- Apply legislative knowledge to project triggers and manage environmental risk.

- Coordinate with local Authorities for approvals.

- Solve problems encountered using knowledge, innovation and modifications of standard procedures or methods developed in previous works.

- Contributes to the area of expertise, providing proposed improvements to existing processes and deliver solutions where precedent may not exist.

- Perform technical quality reviews of environmental assessments, models and survey analysis, including documentation in project records by adhering to quality, occupational health and safety and corporate standards.

- Maintain and develop the highest level of technical skills and abilities.

- Use pricing and manages budget/schedule for innovative environmental enhancements.    

Client Relationship Management

The successful candidate will be expected to:

- Attend client meetings as technical support to gather information and discuss project requirements, explain/ defend work, etc.

- Present solutions to clients in a professional and technically competent manner.    

- Participate in the development and preparation of bids and proposals.

Minimum Requirements

 - 8+ Years of relevant experience.

- Bachelor of Science, Arts or Engineering from an accredited University

- Master of Science/Arts or Engineering preferred but not a prerequisite. Years of experience takes precedence.

- In South Africa professionally registered  as Scientist with SACNASP and EAP with EAPASA.

- Knowledge of international legislation and funder requirements would be beneficial.

-The candidate will be supporting our global team in the US, therefore any knowledge with regards to NEPA and CEPA would be an advantage.
