The Opportunity

Come and discover the opportunity to join our Slabmaking team at our Port Kembla Manufacturing facility as a Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) -Shift Team Leader. As a part of the broader Australian Steel Products portfolio, we have six major manufacturing sites at Port Kembla that deliver a variety of products, innovative solutions and services to our export and domestic customers.

The BOS team is responsible for converting the molten iron from the Blast Furnace to steel via the BOS process.As the shift team leader, you’ll ensure the safety, quality and reliable operation of our BOS Furnace assets, maximising the timely delivery of liquid steel to the Caster via the Steel Treatment plant now and into the future.

In this highly specialised leadership role, you will lead a multi-skilled team focusing on the delivery of exceptional performance whilst championing a safety-first culture. In order to ensure operational productivity and asset preservation targets are achieved, you’ll be the key point of contact to provide investigation and failure analysis on equipment issues. You’ll manage the team’s success through their performance and productivity to ensure our business plan objectives and targets are continually met – including overseeing operational external contractors and teams.

This opportunity supports a 12-hour shift, 4 on (2 days/2 nights), 4 off roster.

What Will You Do?

Reporting to the Furnace Operations Manager, you will demonstrate your leadership skills and be responsible for:

  • ensuring safety standards are never compromised making suitable changes when risks and opportunities are identified
  • analysing asset performance and collaborating with team members to improve equipment performance, capability and costs
  • resolving equipment issues impacting on operational productivity
  • building effective relationships to drive the continuous reliability of our BOS Furnace and auxiliary assets
  • coaching, mentoring and developing the team to enhance capabilities
  • fostering a positive work culture, of inclusiveness and acceptance

More About You

With your leadership experience, you’ll have the ability to make calculated decisions while working in a fast-paced environment. You will also have:

  • tertiary qualifications in engineering, science or process

    or experience working in a similar manufacturing area such as BOS and the Slabmaking area
  • a commitment to the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others
  • experience leading and developing a team
  • an ability to influence peers and colleagues to meet operational requirements, scheduling and people demands
  • enthusiasm and initiative while working with competing priorities
