Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Sales Manager to join our South Africa team. You will have responsibility for the Southern Africa territory with a focus on developing the institutional and library market as well as non-institutional targets for driving print revenue and market share. A senior position, it will focus on both short-term revenue delivery as well as medium- and long-term market development to grow share and influence in the Southern African market. You will be working with both external stakeholders like local agents and trade and internal colleagues in sales, marketing and editorial to achieve this aim.

This role will involve extensive travel across the territory of Southern Africa.

What you will be doing:

  • Achieving and exceeding annual sales targets, building market share and influence and contributing to the overall revenue and profit objectives
  • Establishing a strategic approach to the short-, medium- and long-term business in Southern Africa to ensure that activity is both relevant and flexible to the evolving trading environment over time.
  • Report periodically to the senior management on sales progress and the business environment, thus ensuring responsiveness to both the micro and macro trading conditions.
  • Cultivate strong, holistic relationships with the customer base, with a focus on building direct institutional relationships in the territory
  • Uphold company trading and terms policy, to protect profitability and value of business in territory/channel; exploring new channels for business delivery and operations including e-commerce, local POD printing, etc. to grow market share and influence
  • Actively liaising with internal and external stakeholder groups (including Agents, authors, and institutional contacts) to enhance T&F’s coverage of the territory – includes Sales (online and print), editorial, marketing, and sales support.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience of working in a sales environment (ideally with some experience in academic publishing) with an understanding of the demands placed on sales teams.
  • Target-focussed approach with a strong commercial drive and significant experience meeting and exceeding sales targets
  • Consultative sales skills with a customer-focused approach
  • The ability to effectively respond to customer needs, soliciting feedback to improve service
  • Ability to create and maintain positive and effective relationships both internal and external
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent numerical skills including the ability to comfortably manage budgets and to analyse and present numerical data effectively
  • Strong decision making and problem-solving skills
  • Experience leading and managing a sales team including recruitment, motivation and development
  • Strong leadership skills including the ability to inspire and motivate others to perform well

The successful candidate can work remotely but must be based in territory. This role and will involve extensive travel in Southern Africa. You must have the right to work and live in South Africa. This role is open to candidates in all areas across South Africa.
