Job Objectives:

Provide diagnostic polysomnography testing procedures and all additional components as they relate to sleep medicine.

Responsibilities

Competently performs polysomnography testing on patients;

Trains new staff in all aspects of polysomnography;

Independently scores polysomnography recordings for all montages;

Makes required changes to the recording/montage as directed by the physician;

Records on a computerized sleep system with proficiency;

Demonstrates the ability to interact well with patients, including severely ill or difficult patients; and/or with children and adolescents;

Interacts well with physicians regarding sleep medicine and discusses case studies at sleep conferences;

Accurately charts technical comments for physician review relative to the polysomnography recording;

Possesses complete understanding of the function and components of positive airway pressure, bilevel airway pressures and oxygen for the administration of sleep disordered breathing;

Maintains appropriate paperwork for polysomnography charts;

Maintains a good working knowledge of computerized sleep systems;

Assists with the coordination of sleep conferences and sleep support groups;

Assists with quality assurance programs;

Demonstrates ongoing involvement in continuing education in the field of sleep medicine;

Adheres to all hospital policies, procedures and regulations.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Assists with transporting of patients when needed; restocking and ordering of supplies; and other duties as assigned.

QualificationsEducation/Knowledge/Skills: Must hold credentials from the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT). Must possess a broad understanding of all aspects of sleep medicine. A registered polysomnography technologist has the knowledge to competently perform all tasks that are associated with the day and night shift operations as they pertain to polysomnography. For staff involved in the care of age-specific groups, knowledge of the bio-psychosocial needs of adult, geriatric and pediatric patients is essential. Special knowledge is required in growth and development needs of pediatric/geriatric patients where applicable. Experience: A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in the clinical field of polysomnography/scoring is required. Licensure/Certifications: Must be currently licensed in Polysomnography by the Tennessee Department of Health. Must be currently certified (or scheduled for certification or recertification training according to department guidelines) in CPR.
