Job Description

The Regional QA Manager is responsible for the management of food safety and quality programs and direct management of plant QA and sanitation personnel for Stratas' shortening, margarine and oils producing plants to assure Stratas Foods, LLC, is appropriately positioned to supply safe and quality products to the food industry.

The Regional QA Senior Manager focuses of QA and Food Safety and leads and mentors his / her team to evolve a safety and quality culture based on three key actions:

Ensuring our ingredients, equipment, processes, and personnel training levels are appropriate so that we “Make it Right the First Time”

Championing Food Safety and Quality by teaching that Food Safety & Quality begin with “U” (ie. understanding the impact our actions have on the product)

Focusing on the Fix” or employing a robust root cause analysis approach when we encounter process deviations

This position reports to the VP of RDIQ.

The Manager's Responsibilities:

1. Develops, implements and assesses process/systems

(20% of time) - plans and directs all shortening, margarines, and oils programs and management of change, optimizes and / or implements ingredient / product specification systems, drives continuous improvement, and provides input to locations and corporate leaders related to capital needed to grow Stratas' food safety and quality leadership position in the DSM category.
  • Develop and implement corporate policies and procedures
  • Work with plant QA on continuous improvement of quality and food safety programs
  • Ensures quality plans are in place for new products / processes
2. Drives implementation of process control strategies using data analysis, trending, application of statistics, root cause analysis & corrective actions and other quality management within the shortening, margarines and oils product category

(30% of time).
  • Ensure HACCP plans are in place and validated
  • Monitor corporate complaint system and work with DSM plants to identify root cause and corrective actions.
  • Work with DSM producing plants to identify / rectify recurring issues with meeting specifications.
  • Collaborates with the Regional QA Director to publish monthly statistics summarizing key quality metrics across all producing plants.
3. Shapes food safety, quality and regulatory culture/reputation

(20% of time) - manages the corporate regulatory team, interfaces with commercial leaders within the business unit and acts as a liaison between customer and operations to ensure standard / expectations are met, builds and develops an effectively engaged workforce, and leads implementation of QA strategy / tactical plans for Stratas' producing plants.
  • Communicate regulatory changes and events in the industry
  • Support plants with audit certification and continuing certification requirements
  • Work with plants to investigate and resolve customer non-conformances.
4. People/resource/budget management

(30% of time) - leads talent management of quality team within the shortening, margarine, and oils QA organization. Accountable for selection, training, development, performance management and engagement of direct/indirect reports, develop/implement short range (tactical) QA plans in alignment with DSM commercial and Ops management, actively participates in development of QA initiatives and budgets, and set accurate and challenging budgets, key member of the Corporate QA leadership team. Works collaboratively and cross functionally with Ops, product development, and commercial team members.
  • Identifies training needs for plant QA and Sanitation team members as it relates to corporate quality systems and programs.
  • Knowledgeable and able to transfer this knowledge as it relates to: planning, conducting various types of audits and inspections (laboratory, manufacturing, sampling plans/methods, system/documentation, etc) while empowering his / her team members to strive to develop their individual skill sets as it relates to achieving the ability to recognize and resolve potential issues in these environments

Qualifications

Education:

BS and/or advanced degree in science or other applicable fields

Related Experience:

7 plus years of consumer-packaged goods (CPG) food safety/quality/regulatory experience

Shortening, Margarine, Oils experience preferred

HACCP & SQF training preferred

Solid understanding of FDA / FSMA requirements

Experience/knowledgeable in Microbiology, Food Safety (HACCPs and GMPs), and Quality Assurance

Equipment/Software Skills:

Strong computer skills - Microsoft Office software (MS Word, Access, Powerpoint)

Certifications:

Quality Auditor Certification or ability to become certified

Green Belt/Black Belt or other Lean Six Sigma Certifications

Additional Information

Physical: Must be able to climb stairs, sit and stand for long periods; type for long periods of time

Sensory: Good listening skills; public speaking abilities to communicate with both hourly and salaried personnel

Mental/Reasoning: Must be able to perform root cause analysis and corrective action. Must be able to continuously learn and adapt to changes in the overall business relative to DSM regulations and customer needs.
