The national team covers politics, policy, economics and human-interest stories for a business focussed audience. In this role, you will be responsible for driving our federal political coverage, leading a team of political reporters in Canberra and ensuring timely, accurate, and engaging reporting. This is a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on political journalism, covering key issues and the people shaping Australia's political landscape.Key Responsibilities:Plan and commission federal political coverage, driving breaking political news and meeting strict digital edition deadlinesCollaborate with political reporters to generate unique story ideas, lead the news agenda and break genuine scoopsBrief daily news conferences on federal politics coverageWrite in-depth analysis and feature articles on major political issuesWrite ‘The Week in Politics’ email newsletterEdit breaking news to ensure it meets AFR’s standards for clarity, accuracy, balance, and timelinessProactively oversee the visual presentation of stories, using a variety of digital and storytelling formats and commissioning photography and graphics when requiredMaintain and grow a network of reliable political contactsContribute to AFR’s podcasts as required.
