That’s where you come in.We are looking for Part-Time/ Casual Data Collectors to join the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) Project as part of the UTHealth School of Public Health in Houston, TX. This is an hourly position that will require availability at night, and on weekends, and the individuals in this role would need to be comfortable visiting the bars/clubs around Houston. Incumbents will conduct interviews of research subjects, primarily in the field. Collects data. Records data for various health studies.The National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) project collects data to monitor HIV behavioral risk factors among persons at high risk for HIV infection. The project is conducted in over 20 U.S. cities with the highest prevalence of HIV. NHBS data collectors are trained to use a standardized anonymous questionnaire to collect information on HIV-related risk behaviors, HIV testing, and the use of HIV prevention services. All participants are offered a free HIV test regardless of their HIV status.NHBS data are used to provide a behavioral context for trends seen in HIV surveillance data. They also describe populations at increased risk for HIV infection and provide an indication of the leading edge of the epidemic. Findings from NHBS are used to enhance the understanding of HIV behavioral risk factors and testing behaviors and to develop and evaluate HIV prevention programs that provide services.This project collects data from gay and bisexual men using venue-based sampling. The data collector team conducts the project in selected venues (bars, clubs, businesses, and street locations) on scheduled days/times. In order to recruit participants, our team’s schedule includes some late nights and weekends. The team recruits eligible men to participate in the project activities (survey and HIV testing). All project activities occur within the venues. All study activities are anonymous and project staff must respect the privacy, confidentiality, and autonomy of participants. Position Key Accountabilities:

Survey data collection including recruitment, consent, and questionnaire over behavioral risk factors for HIV, HIV testing behavior, and prevention strategies

Establish rapport with study participants in order to encourage complete accurate responses and continuing participation in the study.

Data collection occurs at venues (bars, clubs, businesses, and street locations). Conducts interviews in an environment, which may be dirty, have unpleasant odors or be in generally unfavorable locations or weather conditions.

Work days and times are some weekdays, late nights, and weekends.

Project manager or principal reviews work.

Utilizes the equipment as trained by the project manager or principal in order to obtain the required information.

Accurate documentation of participant information on forms and into required databases.

Conducts HIV testing.

Other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Trained by project manager or principal on techniques to interview, complete questionnaires, and operate equipment. May need to be bilingual.

Preferred:

Excellent communication skills

Comfortable working with diverse and stigmatized populations

Must be able to travel alone to offsite work and data collection locations within the city.

Minimum Education:

High School diploma

Minimum Experience:

Two years related experience with emphasis on public contact.

May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement.

Physical Requirements: Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
