MISSION STATEMENTThe mission of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.SUMMARYThe overall purpose of this position is to lead, facilitate and provide technical expertise to computational and data science-based research in the Morfeus lab and for the Image Guided Cancer Therapy (IGCT) Program. This position will participate in data science and computational science research and development projects in the Morfeus Lab and IGCT and will apply relevant expertise in the development of algorithms and software for complex applications. The Data Scientist will develop algorithms and software tools, testing/validation, documentation and revisions of these algorithms and tools, through programing and query languages, assist in implementation and documentation of graphics, image processing and visualization software using associated software packages/libraries. The Data Scientist will maintain tools and infrastructure for troubleshooting and resolving complex and specific problems. The Data Scientist will provide data science technical expertise and work closely with clinical and research collaborators to analyze, define, and resolve computer problems and improve systems, processes, data transfer, scripting, automation, workflow efficiency, and analysis of outcomes for a wide array of computational projects. This position will serve as a bridge between the clinical and research areas of the IGCT Program and will contribute directly to the clinical translation of research advances.Data Science ResearchWorks with other laboratory staff on data science and computational science research and development projects and provides relevant expertise in the development of algorithms and software for complex applications. Provides technical assistance to research projects in the areas of development, testing, documentation, process improvement, and revisions of computational and data science software and programs through computer programing and the use of query languages such as Python, Matlab, JavaScript, SQL, etc. Utilizes Python and associated data science libraries (e.g., NumPy, Scikit-Learn, SciPy) and leverages deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch and TensorFlow) for data science research. Develops and maintains software tools and infrastructure for resolving specific problems. Advises and assists other members of the IGCT and Morfeus Lab teams in analyzing, defining, and resolving computer problems.Computational ScienceResearch and Data Management Contributes in the implementation and documentation of graphics, image processing and visualization software using associated software packages/libraries such as VTK, ITK, QT. Acquire additional software application knowledge, as needed, to support the work of Morfeus Lab and Image Guided Cancer Therapy Research Program. Collaborates on and contributes to cross-functional research projects, including data acquisition and analysis, deployment of pre-developed algorithms for innovative research, and assessment of workflows and outcomes. Leverages proficiency in Linux, Docker, GitHub, Kubernetes, and XNAT for research projects and translational science. Works closely with collaborators, clinicians, other stakeholders, and clinical and research systems to analyze and improve systems, processes, data transfer, coding, scripting, automation, workflow efficiency, and analysis of outcomes. Serves as a bridge to help integrate and translate advances into the clinical setting. Procures, curates, and transfers imaging, case information, and outcomes data and records from multiple sources and modalities for IGCTRP research projects. The Data Scientist will co-lead out-of-distribution detection research in the IGCT, will serve as the IGCT expert in this area, and will keep abreast of relevant literature. Assists in the clinical translation of research advances. Interacts with clinical staff in multiple departments. Maintains clear and comprehensive records of research data, projects, and processes.Administrative DutiesContributes to written scientific, technical, and commissioning reports, and grants, leads writing efforts for abstracts, posters, and manuscripts. Maintains comprehensive and clear records of data requests, curation and transfer activities, and data generated. Serves as a resource for computational science inquiries and innovative problem solving for complex lab problems. Shares computational knowledge to help lab mates troubleshoot, as needed.Other Duties As AssignedREQUIREMENTSEducation: Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Computational Biology, or related field.Preferred Education: Master's Degree or PhD with a concentration in Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, Computational Science, or related field.Experience: A minimum of three years' experience in scientific software development/analysis.
