The mission of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.The Director, Planning & Design works with the Executive Director (ED) to set priorities, goals and objectives to manage the planning and design process for portfolios consisting of both minor and major projects. Works in conjunction with other Director's and Assistant Directors within Facilities Planning Services to provide planning support when requested to assist in Facility Asset Request (FAR) evaluation, scenario planning, assessment of institutional space utilization, and development of plans for programs. Oversees management teams focused on Research, Administrative/Work Environment and Support areas and the Furniture and Interiors Team. Be able to provide guidance and coordinate with planning for research and patient care areas. Provides guidance and leadership in planning for research and administrative space, development of interior architecture, finishes, furniture and coordination. Provides oversight in development and review of design and construction documents. Coordinates with other members of facilities management to support the multidisciplinary mission of the institution and provides an efficient communication channel for coordination, and problem resolution. Assists the ED with workload management, metrics, department policies and procedures and ensures compliance with Regulatory requirements. Responsible for assigning project teams in all phases of projects. Provides leadership on interior brand and furniture standards and development. Management responsibility of furniture churn budget. Provides leadership in developing, establishing and refining research, work environment, furniture and finish standards. Coordination of art with interior architecture, oversight of art program.JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIESProject Planning/DevelopmentManagement of the Project Planning and Development program which includes; establishment of planning and programming methods and templates for documenting project need projections, scope of work, implementation methods, concept plans, interior finishes and design, furniture planning and & budgets and workplans for design phases. The planning program will maximize the value to the organization based upon the need of the project though the knowledge of Institutional core programs, space utilization and specialty & shared equipment. Assist the ED with management of the Institutional Planning, including the development of Departmental, Divisional, and Institutional planning studies and Master Plans with presentations for institutional leadership review and approval. Also provides planning coordination and support for Executive level committee meetings. Will support the Institution's recruitment program through formal evaluations and recommendations.Compliance / StandardsEnsures compliance of projects and work to Institutional Standards and Policies and Regulatory Requirements.Personnel ManagementAdministrative/Resource Management including establishment of staffing plans, workload assessment and assignment, annual goals, policies and procedures, position descriptions and expectations, staff communications and hiring. Management/Mentoring of all staff including skill assessments, performance evaluations, identification of training opportunities, orientation and training on specialized topics, coaching & counseling sessions, improvement plans, and disciplinary actions when needed. Human Resources, including supervising available personnel in the production of the business unit's products and services; making hiring recommendations for staff positions; conducting performance evaluations and handles personnel issues; completing appropriate reviews and recommends on promotions, salary, and other personnel matters; establishing goals, determines resource requirements, and allocates available resources to meet those goals; creating and implementing changes as needed to meet departmental, divisional, or institutional goals.Work Environment/Finishes and Furniture Planning and DesignProvides leadership in developing, establishing, and refining work environment, furniture and finish standards. Coordination of art with interior architecture, oversight of art program.Research/Lab PlanningProvides leadership in research/lab planning.REQUIREMENTSRequired Education: Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management or related field.Preferred Education: Master's Level DegreePreferred Certification: AIA, ASID, AICP or equivalent.
