Job Summary:
We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Histology Technician to join our team. The
Histology Technician will be responsible for preparing and processing tissue samples for
microscopic examination. This involves various histological techniques such as embedding, sectioning, staining, and preparing slides for diagnosis. The technician will also ensure compliance with safety standards and maintain a high level of quality control in all processes.
Key Responsibilities:
Tissue Processing:
-Receive and prepare tissue samples for histological analysis.
-Perform fixation, dehydration, clearing, and infiltration on tissue samples for
embedding.
Embedding and Sectioning:
-Embed tissue samples in paraffin or other embedding media.
-Cut tissue sections to precise thickness (3–5 microns) using a microtome.
Staining and Mounting:
- Perform routine and special stains, such as Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) and
other specialized staining techniques.
- Mount prepared tissue sections onto slides and label them accurately.
Equipment Maintenance:
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment including microtomes, tissue
processors, and slide stainers.
- Ensure equipment is cleaned, calibrated, and functioning properly.
Quality Control:
- Ensure that all samples meet the required quality standards before they are sent
for review.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any issues related to staining or sample processing.
- Documentation and Record Keeping:
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of tissue processing, staining procedures,
and reagent inventories.
- Assist in maintaining an organized lab environment with up-to-date equipment
and supplies.
Safety and Compliance:
- Follow established laboratory protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
- Adhere to safety guidelines for handling chemicals, biological specimens, and
hazardous materials.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Associate’s degree in Histotechnology, Biology, or a related field is required.
- Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as a
Histotechnician (HT) is preferred.
Experience:
- Previous experience in a histology laboratory or clinical setting is preferred, but
not required.
- Knowledge of tissue preparation, staining techniques, and equipment operation is
an asset.
Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity to work with small, delicate tissue
samples.
- Proficiency in routine and special histology techniques.
- Ability to troubleshoot issues with tissue processing or staining.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for long periods and work with fine instruments.
- Ability to lift and carry up to [weight] pounds.
Working Conditions:
Laboratory environment with potential exposure to chemicals and biological materials.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as lab coats, gloves, and goggles must be worn
at all times.
Standard working hours with occasional overtime or weekend work required, depending
