What does a Marketing Manager do?

A Marketing Manager understands where to find a client's current and potential customers, what message to convey to them, and how to keep those messages aligned at every point of contact. A Marketing Manager also measures the success of a campaign by analyzing web, social, and other relevant metrics.

The Marketing Manager's job ranges from a moderate level of strategy work (i.e. How do we best communicate this message? How do we best capture more customers? How do we best assist and support the sales team to attract and convert B2B sales prospects?) to day-to-day, on the ground management of marketing plans and tactics . This includes working with vendors to ensure projects are kept on-task, appropriately finished to completion and within a reasonable time frame.

As CalTech's current marketing department is lean, the Marketing Manager at is expected to "wear a number of hats". No task is too small, but there is also a need for executional and strategic support and leadership to share in the collective responsibility of helping the company meet its business goals.

General Duties and Expectations

The Marketing Manager develops (in total or with support) and manages marketing programs in specific channels, support business objectives, lead acquisition, foster customer retention, execute business development, provide sales support, and advance brand building.

The Marketing Manager assists and/or leads in overseeing the daily operation of CalTech's many marketing activities, whether personally or managing the work of vendors or others within the department. Senior Marketing Managers may lead a team or have responsibility for marketing a specific set of services or prioritized initiatives.

At times, the job of the Marketing Manager may require market research and analysis, campaign strategy and evaluation. Marketing Managers are expected to work well with senior management and coordinate the work of creative teams (internal or external). Knowledge of new and emerging media channels and tools is also important.

Your Responsibilities as Marketing Manager:
  • Build marketing programs to support specific marketing objectives across different channels and segments and in support of our overall business and sales goals
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design marketing and sales collateral and implement product marketing strategies
  • Develop and execute quarterly marketing campaigns for current and new products based on analysis of the competitive landscape
  • Communicate closely with executive-level staff to make acquisition channel recommendations based on marketing analysis; report monthly sales, marketing initiatives, ROIs, referrals, and budgets to C-suite staff and senior leadership
  • Develop business cases for marketing programs at the proposal stage and make recommendations on marketing tactics
  • Edit sales scripts and emails, design training processes, strategically develop prospect list based on our target customer profile and personas, and lead generation
  • Serve as the primary point of media contact for internal, client, and public-facing communications
  • Oversee social media content, strategies, and content delivery
  • Segment and track activity working with data collection platforms (e.g. Hubspot) and apply analysis to reach conclusions on activities, levels of success, and means for improvement
  • Evaluate the impact of marketing programs in achieving their stated objectives, including impact on lead flow, lifetime customer value and retention
  • When necessary, propose and manage marketing research projects to generate B2B target insights in support of improved marketing strategy and communications
  • Partner with internal stakeholders, and external agencies and vendors to improve marketing outcomes
  • Manage and mentor CalTech's Sales Development Representative and Marketing Coordinator
  • Develop and implement CalTech's Customer and Partner Referral Programs

What skills you'll need:
  • Excellent attention to detail and can edit/proofread in the professional arena
  • Excellent organization skills
  • Strong creative proofing skills
  • Strong persuasive communication skills (written and spoken)
  • Ability to demonstrate patience, tact, and enthusiasm in communicating with prospects
  • Experience with marketing, vendor management, and leadership/management is preferred
  • Must be highly self-motivated, disciplined, and hold a "can do" attitude
  • 2 - 3 years of marketing campaign experience
  • Experience building detailed, measured marketing programs and reporting on the results
  • Exposure to digital, social and direct response marketing
  • Strong problem-solving ability, including metrics-driven thinking
  • Basic familiarity (exposure to, but not an expert) with the following software tools: Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
  • Competency in Hubspot (preferred)
  • Competency in Microsoft 365 Business tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Bachelor's in marketing or business or similar preferred
  • Willingness to adapt and learn new platforms or technology for improving marketing activities and outcomes

Working Conditions

This position involves in-office work and travel for customer meetings, relationship development, training, events, and team meetings. Some after-business hours will be required, as well as the use of a personal vehicle for job-related travel with mileage reimbursement.
