Position Title: Weight Loss Medical Assistant
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Department: Weight Loss/Wellness Clinic
Reports To: Clinic Manager / Medical Provider
Position Summary:
As a Weight Loss Medical Assistant, you will support both the clinical and administrative operations of the weight-loss program. You’ll assist providers and wellness staff in delivering effective, patient-focused care, track patient progress, and help maintain a welcoming, organized clinic environment.
Clinical Duties
Greet patients and assist with check-in: obtain basic demographics
Measure and record vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, temperature), height, weight, body measurements (e.g., waist, hip) and calculate BMI. (Duties of MAs in weight-loss clinics include measuring vital signs, weight/height, BMI, etc.)
During clinical visits: rooming the patient, assisting with exam, may perform EKGs, blood draws/venipuncture, and administer injections or other treatments (as delegated) — particularly in a weight-loss program context.
Educate and coach patients on weight-loss program components (nutrition guidelines, lifestyle changes, follow-up processes) under supervision of provider or wellness coach.
Maintain accurate documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR): charting vitals, treatments, patient progress, follow-up orders, labs.
Monitor and prepare laboratory specimens (urine, finger-stick glucose, etc.), perform routine in-office testing if applicable.
Maintain exam rooms: clean, stock supplies and instruments, ensure infection-control protocols are followed
Administrative/Front Office Duties
Handle patient check-out: process payments/co-pays, schedule next visit, provide program materials.
Answer phone calls, respond to patient inquiries about the weight-loss program, medications, next steps.
Maintain clinic records: file charts, scan documents, ensure proper patient consent forms and program agreements are in place.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a Medical Assistant certificate/program preferred.
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) preferred; current BLS/CPR certification required.
Strong clinical skills: ability to take vital signs accurately, draw blood, perform injections, assist with EKGs and other basic tests.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills: ability to engage patients, coach and motivate them in their weight-loss journey.
Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems, scheduling systems, and basic office software.
Ability to multitask in a busy clinic environment; strong organizational skills.
Knowledge or interest in nutrition, wellness, lifestyle medicine is a plus.
Experience in a weight-loss, wellness or similar outpatient clinic setting is a plus.
