A postdoctoral position in the field of Hematopoiesis/Leukemogenesis is available in the laboratory of Dr. Simona Cola in the Department of Leukemia at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Our focus is on defining the role of telomere dysfunction in the pathogenesis of myelodysplastic syndromes and aging-related diseases.Our experimental systems include both genetic mouse models and primary leukemia stem and progenitor cells from MDS patients.Responsibilities include the following:Conducting and managing day-to-day experiments related to the development and progression of MDS.Providing the principal investigator with daily updates regarding laboratory and analytical progress.Reporting challenges in a timely manner; researching and staying up to date on cutting edge technology and peer reviewed literature related to the subject matter.Communicating with collaborators and colleagues at MD Anderson and elsewhere.Supervising and mentoring graduate students and laboratory technicians.Writing and submitting grants and publications.Presenting data at internal and external meetings, seminars, and conferences.Assisting the lab manager with day-to-day laboratory operations.Assuring laboratory compliance with institutional, local, state, and national rules and regulations; and other duties as assigned.LEARNING OBJECTIVESUnder the supervision of the principal investigator, the individual will conduct research aimed at therapeutically targeting leukemia cells using cell culture, signal processing, molecular biology, biochemistry and high-throughput drug discovery-related techniques. The individual will collaborate with other established principal investigators as well.ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTSIndividuals with a Ph.D. degree in the related research field, highly motivated and self-directed, with good communication and problem-solving skills, are encouraged to apply. Applicant should have the following training-related experience and qualifications. A strong background in hematology/immunology Extensive molecular biology, flow cytometry, and immunofluorescence experience is required. Experience with hematopoietic stem cells and animal models are essential.
