POSITION OVERVIEWApplications accepted from: All Persons InterestedJob Classification: Safety OfficerPosting#: 33985 Division: Risk ManagementReporting Location: TBD Subject to changeWorkdays & Hours: Monday – Friday 7:30 am-4:30 pm & On Call Subject to Change DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSConducts safety surveys, inspections, and audits to evaluate safety related needs in order to make recommendations. Inspect work sites to evaluate safe work practices and working conditions. The Safety Officer will also evaluate, develop, conduct field and in-house safety training programs for their effectiveness. This position will investigate accidents/injuries to determine root causes and recommend corrective action. Furthermore, the incumbent will oversee the implementation, monitoring of industrial hygiene and safety related medical surveillance programs. The Safety Officer will also prepare, analyze, and evaluate statistical data to provide information for trends and solutions to work-related problems. Driving to various City of Houston locations is an essential function of this position. Other duties will be assigned as needed.Periodically, serves on-call for after-hour incident investigations. When TIER I level is activated, employee must report to a specified City location. WORKING CONDITIONSThe position may require lifting of moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds), and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. The position may also require climbing and/or certain body contortions.There are routine discomforts from exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness and unpleasant air conditions. The position may involve exposure to soiled materials and light chemical substances such as cleaning solutions.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEDUCATION REQUIREMENTSRequires a Bachelor's degree in Technology, Engineering, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field. Completion of advanced training resulting in certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) is preferred.EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSThree years of experience in Safety Administration or a closely related field are required. Pertinent professional experience may be substituted for the above educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.LICENSE REQUIREMENTSRequires a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.PREFERENCESExperience in Occupational Safety and Health or related field. Completion of advanced training resulting in certification as an Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Graduate Safety Professional (GSP), Transitional Safety Professional (TSP), Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), Certified Safety and Health Official (CSHO), and Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COSS) is preferred.Proficiency in Microsoft Office Application including MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Outlook, MS Teams.Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.GENERAL INFORMATIONSELECTION / SKILLS TESTS REQUIREDDepartment may administer skills assessment testSAFETY IMPACT POSITION YESIf yes, this position is subject to random drug testing and if candidate is promoted into this position, he/she must pass an assigned drug test.SALARY INFORMATIONFactors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate’s qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
