Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?Here at VMware, the Telco Cloud foundation development team is looking for a UI developer to join their fully remote distributed team.This team builds User Interfaces for Telco Cloud products, including Uhana by VMware and the pioneering VMware RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC), which help our customers manage hundreds of thousands of devices and millions of subscribers. Scale and performance are central to everything we do; we use the latest tools and technologies, blending the best of Open Source with home-grown development to build powerful, easy-to-use, robust, and scalable telco-grade software. The UI development team works closely with the backend and API teams, and with VMware’s world-class User Experience (UX) group, to build clean, modern, and usable user interfaces using the industry-leading VMware Clarity framework.This position for a mid-senior level UI developer in the Telco Cloud foundation development team.Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?Short-term (1-3 months)Establish development and test environments
Understand and be able to build and deploy the Uhana and RIC products
Be familiar with tools (JIRA, Confluence, Slack) and development processes, including those for design, coding and testing
Identify key personnel in the team and know who to go to when you have questions
Have committed code to resolve a few defects or small features, with guidance from senior team members
Medium-term (3-6 months)Participate in a complete product release cycle
Help drive a small project to completion, from requirements definition and refinement, through estimation, coding, and testing, to delivery
Actively participate in release and sprint planning activities
Identify areas of potential specialization
Long-term (6-12 months)Become expert in and own a specific area of the UI
Have resolved moderately complex problems with minimal supervision
Help drive a substantial project to completion, in cooperation with senior development staff, from requirements, through estimation, coding and testing, to delivery
Have established working relationships with senior development staff
The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?Key responsibilities include:Analysing feature requirements, and preparing functional specifications and designs to meet them
Scoping and preparing estimates for new features, and actively contributing to the release planning process
Implementing new features in a carrier-grade, scalable software platform, and maintaining existing features
Implementing and maintaining test automation suites
Collaborating with system architects, management, and peers to drive projects to completion
Preparing documentation and training materials
Skills, qualifications, and experience required:Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related discipline; advanced degree preferred
5+ years UI development experience
Highly proficient in TypeScript and JavaScript
Substantial experience with React; experience with AngularJS would be an asset
Proficient with shell scripting and at least one scripting language such as Python or Groovy
Experience working with with RESTful APIs, and authentication technologies such as JWT, SAML and OAuth
Experience with microservice architectures, Docker, Kubernetes, and one or more public cloud platforms such as AWS or Microsoft Azure
Very strong problem solving and debugging skills
Comfortable with fast-paced development and rapidly evolving requirements
Excellent communication and presentation skills
Comfortable working with a highly distributed remote team
Experience with the VMware Clarity framework would be a significant asset
Experience with the Cypress test automation framework would be an asset
What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?The hiring manager for this role is a Director R&D, leading the Telco Cloud foundation development team from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The manager and his team joined VMware from Dell EMC in 2018. This position will report to him.The larger Telco foundation team is primarily located in the United States (65%), with smaller contingents in India (15%), Canada (15%), and the United Kingdom (5%), and embraces a diversity of backgrounds, skills, and experiences.
