OverviewThe Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and in advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy.PNNL’s Buildings Systems Group performs applied research to enhance the energy and water efficiency, occupant productivity, and resilient operation of buildings and their connected energy and water systems. Our core research capabilities span building performance evaluation, building control system optimization, building technology measurement, validation, and demonstration, and site-level assessment, techno-economic and lifecycle assessment, and planning for energy and water resilience. We work closely with over 300 subject matter experts across the broader Electricity Infrastructure & Buildings Division to support the Nation’s transition to a sustainable, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through innovation and actionable solutions.ResponsibilitiesWe are seeking a detail-oriented Postdoctoral Researcher with experience in data analysis with programming (R and Python), coupled with knowledge of residential building energy systems and building science. The successful candidate will leverage their strong background in building energy systems and building science, along with their technical knowledge and data analysis skills, to assist with the development and update of energy/water consumption models, data collection and organization, development of analytical frameworks, and comprehensive analysis. The candidate will contribute to the development of tools for estimating energy consumption and to projects supporting quantification of non-energy impacts related to energy efficiency and retrofits in the residential sector. Tasks associated with these projects are likely to include conducting literature reviews, contributing to quantification methods, coding/analysis using large datasets, documentation of methods, development of visualizations, and assisting with writing.The successful candidate will be accountable to: Project and/or Task Managers for performing assigned roles, following applicable project and field procedures, and performance of assigned tasks on time and within budget; and the Building Systems Group Leader, for staff development, performance evaluation, and operational discipline (e.g., safe operations). The candidate will apply basic engineering and scientific theories to conduct work that supports the selection and development of technical approaches to complex problems with oversight.The individual will be expected to support our scientists, engineers, and analysts on tasks and projects; support the generation of new ideas for and contributes technical content for small to medium proposals; supports scoping, scheduling, and budgeting for tasks; demonstrates ability to follow guidance, coaching, and mentoring; perform research, development, and analysis tasks with a high degree of quality, attention to detail, safety, and security awareness. In this position, the individual will collaborate with one or more principal investigators of current work, and directly contribute to one or more technical papers suitable for submission to a peer-reviewed journal.Primary responsibilities include:

Analyze data related to residential building energy/water consumption and utility expenses using programming

Develop and modify existing models for energy and water-related utility consumption

Generate detailed reports and visualizations to communicate complex data in an accessible manner

Develop tools to estimate non-energy impacts of retrofits

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications:

Highly-motivated and independent researcher with a demonstrated record of scholarship and technical expertise in data management and analysis for building science and building energy system, statistics and data science

Experience/interest in building energy efficiency and building science, with preference given to candidates with experience in the residential buildings sector

Demonstrated proficiency programming skills for data analysis in R and Python (Pandas)

Familiarity with the relevant datasets, i.e. RECS, ResStock, is preferred

Interest/background in measuring non-energy impacts of residential building retrofits

A collaborative approach to problem-solving and the ability to work well with geographically distributed and interdisciplinary teams

Demonstrated ability to write concisely and clearly

A passion for learning and innovation to advance building energy efficiency and sustainability
