Otter Brook Carpentry, Crew Lead:

-Job Description:

Are you excited about building high-quality homes and leading a young cohort of motivated carpenters? We are seeking an ambitious, team-oriented, and friendly individual to join our framing crew in a leadership role. As a carpentry crew lead, you will be an integral part of a small team building new homes, additions, and garages from foundation to exterior finish. We focus on framing, setting exterior doors and windows, and exterior trim/siding.

Otter Brook Carpentry aims to provide a higher quality framing product than the market standard and fosters a strong understanding of building science by teaching our carpenters the fundamentals of water mitigation, vapor control, air tightness, and insulation. This position is best suited for someone with an interest in green building practices and the flexibility to learn new construction techniques based on the latest industry standards. Each house we frame is slightly different depending on the circumstances of the project. We often frame double-stud walls, but we also sometimes use continuous exterior insulation, Zip-R, or thermally broken studs to meet the needs of each individual project. On all our projects, we make a commitment to airtight construction, and attention to detail regarding water, air, heat, and vapor control is an absolute must.

-Job Responsibilities:

Effectively communicating the upcoming week’s work to the crew. You will be responsible for determining what needs to be accomplished each week to complete the job on time.

Effectively communicating with your supervisor via phone, text, and email. This requires occasionally sending photos and videos from the jobsite.

Professionally communicating with the client while on-site.

Notifying your supervisor if you’re getting low on material and keeping the material in good returnable condition until the end of the job.

Ensuring that tool batteries stay charged, paint and glue stays warm in the winter, and the job trailer stays organized throughout the course of the job.

Ensuring a safe work environment and setting a good example of PPE use for everyone on the crew.

Implementing airtight building practices at all stages of construction. You will be responsible for learning these techniques if needed (with support), teaching them to the newer people on the crew, and confirming that they’re executed properly throughout the project.

Leading the crew through all stages of framing. This requires the following:

o A strong understanding of trigonometry, experience using a construction calculator and framing square.

o A general understanding of the shrinkage rates of different materials in relation to the direction of their grain.

o A strong understanding of how to carry loads from roof to foundation with load paths through the framing

o A strong conceptual understanding of shear loads and how to build for shear strength

o A general understanding of the IRC and RBES codes, as well as demonstrating the ability to access these resources and use them to determine the code requirements while in the field.

o Reading blueprints and using a scale ruler.
