Newport News Shipbuilding has an opportunity for an Acoustics Engineer Mechanical 3 to join their team. The team is seeking an engineer to model, analyze and perform assessments of acoustic transmission paths in mechanical systems. Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

Basic Qualifications5 Years with Bachelors in Science; 3 Years with Masters; 0 Years with PhD.- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience and/or course work in acoustics or vibrations is preferred in order to analyze acoustic engineering issues in ship designs.
  • Knowledge or experience with US Navy mechanical ship systems is highly desired, ideally a US Navy veteran with an engineering background.
  • The successful candidate must be detail-oriented, and able to work in a team environment in order to achieve goals and meet timelines.
  • The candidate should be a quick learner and able to apply new skills to perform acoustic analysis on new ship designs or concepts.
  • Good communication and writing skills will be required in order to present work to peers and customers.
  • Candidate must be a self-starter, able to work independently, and perform engineering acoustic analyses with documented rigor.
  • Experience with acoustic transfer functions, acoustic level predictions, acoustic or vibration testing, ship or systems engineering, use of MATLAB is a plus, although not required.
