Ensures safe work controls for hot work jobs involving flammable or combustible material, including authorizing confined space entry and hot work onboard ships, in shops, and throughout the shipyard in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards. Responsible for providing training and direction to employees who provide technical marine chemistry support and for determining whether to deem these employees Shipyard Competent Persons (SPC), authorized to perform work in certain spaces that do not require Certified Marine Chemist authorization. Drafts, Reviews, and Revises internal policies and procedures, work standards, and training material as necessary to ensure compliance. Provides marine and shipyard safety guidance, counsel, and service to company representatives and acts as an agent of the company for risk assessment. Must hold a valid certificate issued by the NFPA in accordance with the Rules for the Certification and Recertification of Marine Chemists, which establishes the certificate holder as a person qualified to determine whether construction, alteration, repair, lay-up, or shipbreaking of vessels, which may involve hazards covered by the standard, can be undertaken with safety.
