The primary responsibilities for this role will revolve around assisting with multiple substation physical engineering and design project execution initiatives and support. This work is vital to support the Company’s transmission and distribution growth plans and includes support of projects vary in size and complexity. While this position is primarily in an office environment, periodic field trips to Dominion substations will be required. Participation in site visits to support the construction group and/or asset owners. This individual must be able to meet NERC qualifications.Primary responsibilities will include the following:Develop physical design engineering packages for Dominion’s Electric Transmission and Electric Distribution Substations.Performs engineering calculations, analysis, research, and design.Exercise independence in evaluating, selecting, and applying standard or well-defined engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.Uses independent judgment in prioritizing and making moderately complex adaptations and modifications. Physical design of electrical substations for new construction and upgrades.Prepare and review substation documents and drawings to be issued for construction, typically these include: One-line diagram, Substation general arrangement, Elevations and details, Conduit and Foundation plan, Cable schedule, Ground grid plan, Bill of materials.Collaborate with other disciplines to complete grading plan, steel structures and bus design.Participation in site visits to support the construction group and/or asset owners.Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & ExperienceFor Both Engineering Technical Specialist series and Engineer series:
Engineer II - 3+ years of experience Substation Physical Engineering or demonstrated equivalent.
Engineer III - 5+ years of experience Substation Physical Engineering or demonstrated equivalent.
Engineering Technical Specialist II - 3+ years of relevant work experience in a technical role with a preferred bachelor’s degree (Or 5 years of relevant work experience in a technical role with an associate degree)
Engineering Technical Specialist III - 5+ years of relevant work experience in a technical role with a preferred bachelor’s degree (Or 7 years of relevant work experience in a technical role with an associate degree)
The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:
Experience with Electric Utility preferred
Thorough understanding of the principles and practices for transmission lines, distribution feeders, and major substation components.
Ability to read, interpret, and verify accuracy of one-line diagrams
Knowledge of MicroStation and / or AutoCAD
Knowledge and application of engineering theories and principles, concepts, and fundamentals
Competency in applying engineering principles, fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures requiring some evaluation, originality and/or ingenuity to achieve project objectives
Planning, organizational and project management skills
Effective decision-making skills
Effective oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing)
Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems
Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices
Equally effective working independently or in a team environment
Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks
Licenses, Certifications, or Quals DescriptionEducation RequirementsREQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA:
For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:
Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technologyand a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
For Engineering Technical Specialist II or III: Preferred Bachelor's degreeIn order to be a titled Engineering Technical Specialist, you must meet one of the following criteria:
4-year Engineering Technology degree or 4-year degree in Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or
4-year degree in Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Engineering or other technical related discipline; or
4-year non-technical degree and post-graduate degree in Engineering Technology or Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or
Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred degree
