The Defense Systems Group provides analysis-based decision support to senior leaders on space architectures, policy and strategy, developmental planning, system of systems engineering, and threat reduction to help shape future space missions across the defense enterprise.

As the General Manager of the National Space Systems Engineering (NSSE) division, you will lead and strengthen a diverse organization providing deep technical expertise, critical recommendations, and responsive decision support to the Government across a wide range of space-related programs, projects, and issues. The successful candidate will provide overall leadership and technical insight to the Aerospace teams at Department of the Air Force Headquarters (DAF), the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), and Space Force organizations like the Space Development Agency. This is a hybrid position requiring 3-4 days in the Pentagon or Crystal City office and 1-2 day remote.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Overall leadership and management of Aerospace's Pentagon and Space Development Agency (SDA) support organization. Develop division vision, strategy, and objectives consistent with corporate goals and initiatives and customer expectations. Provide direction and planning for achieving both strategic and tactical goals.
  • Establish trusted relationships with key senior space leaders at multiple echelons across key Pentagon organizations like OSD, DAF and USSF. Establish and maintain Aerospace's positive reputation with new and existing customers as a problem solver and thought leader that works at the enterprise level. Anticipate future customer needs and evolve an agile, high-quality technical and enterprise support work force (on-site and matrix) to respond at speed.
  • Deliver superb decision support capabilities and products to Pentagon and SDA customers. Lead and support cross-corporation and cross-organizational teams to execute studies and analysis activities of national significance. Foster appropriate cooperation and coordination across the space enterprise to help assure enterprise mission success.
  • For acquisition programs supported within the division, maintain focus on innovation and mission success from cradle to grave across the portfolio, track and communicate the risk posture, and facilitate enterprise teams as appropriate to provide viable solutions to shape program goals and mitigate mission risk.
  • Position Aerospace in the highest value functions across the portfolio, translating customer requirements into division operating plans. Set technical priorities, manage to budget constraints, perform workforce and succession planning and assure alignment with Aerospace policies and practices.
  • Operate NSSE division according to Aerospace core principles; creating and instilling a culture characterized by agility, speed, information sharing and continuous learning.
  • Provide strategic leadership and support to the government planning and implementation of policy, acquisition, and requirements initiatives for developing architectural alternatives, assessing system acquisitions, budgets, and rationalizing investment portfolios.
  • Provide leadership for team members, setting expectations and direction, mentoring, providing critical feedback, succession planning, and coaching aimed at developing an agile management team and technical staff.

What You Need to Be Successful

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in science or engineering or equivalent is required
  • 14 or more years of progressively demonstrated management and technical experience, including multi-disciplinary systems engineering in a program, project, and policy oversight environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including team building/leadership, conflict resolution, staffing and customer relationship building.
  • Broad technical and some specific technical expertise relevant to Aerospace's Department of the Air Force ( DAF) customers.
  • Experience supporting and/or leading technical study teams examining topics of national significance
  • Proven ability to develop/maintain rapport and work effectively with senior government officials (including presidential appointees and flag or SES level) and corporate executives from diverse organizations, including multiple Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs).
  • Proven ability to network with contractors, other government agencies, the various Aerospace program offices, and Engineering Technology Group (ETG) to address issues and provide the customer with the best available technical and programmatic analyses.
  • Must have strong business and financial acumen with constructive and proactive methods for problem solving. Ability to make time-critical mission success decisions with ambiguous or incomplete data.
  • Demonstrated ability to define a strategy, develop and communicate solution implementation plans, and execute plans in collaboration with other organizations and individuals to achieve objectives.
  • Excellent written communication skills - organize complex materials and concepts in clear and logical manner
  • Excellent verbal communication skills - clear, concise, persuasive; builds consensus through speaking; polished, professional style
  • This position requires an Active TS/SSBI security clearance, which is issued by the US government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance
  • Ability to travel as required

How You Can Stand Out

  • Master's technical and/or business degree
  • Strategy and policy-level insight
  • In-depth knowledge of roles played by the Department of the Air Force, the U.S. Space Force, the Space Development Agency, the Office of the Secretary of Defense; the Office of the Director of National Intelligence; the National Reconnaissance Office; the Services; the Joint Staff; and other government organizations in development and operations of the national security enterprise .
  • Experience in space system acquisition.
  • Experience in the operational use of space systems for DoD missions.
  • Familiarity with national security system procurement processes, including the Defense Acquisition System (DAS); Programming, Planning, Budgeting and Execution (PPBE); and the Joint Capabilities Integration and Development System (JCIDS).
  • Experience supporting development and/or implementation of national space policy.
  • Previous experience working in the Pentagon.
  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial success cultivating and establishing new customer relationships and meaningful associated work.
  • Applicable SAP/SAR accesses
