Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines. Specific Description:Researches, plans, prototypes, designs, develops, integrates, tests, and integrates manufacturing solutions for component fabrication, structural fabrication and assembly, and other industrial applications. Assesses manufacturing processes and data. Performs complex analysis, concept development, design, and prototyping of tools, jigs, fixtures, and templates for shipyard manufacturing application. Ensures design intent specified in the technical disclosures is satisfied. Refines problem statements toward a clearly defined objective. Creates engineering reports, presentations, and documents.Leads manufacturing and mechanical engineering projects. Is the technical lead for manufacturing engineering products within the group. Provides coaching to less experienced engineers on the team. Reviews technical products. Provides technical approval of engineering drawings and calculations. Understands production processes, up and downstream technical and material requirements, and how production processes are being run to achieve the design intentions. Familiar with naval shipbuilding and industry standards. Experience in complex analysis, developing concepts, drawing, designing, reviewing, approving, and prototyping designs. Works well with trades, management, senior leadership, and other engineers. Able to work alone and as team lead. Adapts quickly to dynamic business needs.

Basic Qualifications5 Years with Bachelors in Science; 3 Years with Masters; 0 Years with PhD.- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Preferred QualificationsStrong technical background with experience in an industrial or shipbuilding manufacturing environment, specifically with shipbuilding manufacturing shops. Three or more years of experience designing jigs, fixtures, and/or tooling. Two or more years of experience approving engineering drawings and calculations. Mechanical engineering PE is preferred, structural engineering PE is highly preferred.
