Newport News Shipbuilding has an opportunity for a Material Process Engineer to join their team! Responsiblities to include, but not limited to:

  • Provides technical direction during melting of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys to achieve chemistry and quality requirements
  • Oversees Argon Oxygen Decarburization (AOD) refining operations
  • Responsible for all Foundry heat treatment engineering functions and decisions: Process Standardization, Remedial Treatment Instructions, Stress Reliefs, and Temperature Uniformity Surveys / System Accuracy Tests.
  • Ensures casting products conform to military and commercial material specifications in support of multiple customers.
  • Reviews chemical, mechanical, non-destructive testing, and casting quality documentation.
  • Provides engineering direction for gating and rising designs of patterns and sand molds.
  • Material specification reviews/interpretations and conformance, providing Engineering technical rationale, and root cause analysis for casting related quality issues.
  • Provides on-site engineering support to the shop floor for emergent issues.
  • Reviews supplier raw materials and consumables to be used in the production of castings.
  • Develops and maintains process performance metrics tracking first time quality of products and identifying process and quality improvements.
  • Provides expertise and support to NNS research and development projects to include interactions with industry experts; American Foundry Society (AFS), Steel Founders’ Society of America (SFSA), Naval Research Centers, ManTech program, and Universities.
  • Oversee the work of junior engineering team members .
  • Interface with peers on facility upgrades and modifications to ensure equipment is adequate to meet technical needs and production expectations.
Analyzes, researches, designs and develops materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems. Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic and composite material and processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes. Develops, analyzes and applies material properties and design allowables, processing processes and quality engineering specifications. Material analyses may include failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications. May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures.

Basic Qualifications5 Years with Bachelors in Science; 3 Years with Masters; 0 Years with PhD.- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Preferred QualificationsIt is highly preferred that a candidate have a degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or equivalent and have experience with:
  • Experience with making High Yield (HY) steel via Argon-Oxygen Decarburization (AOD) processing
  • Versed in both ferrous (steel) and non-ferrous (copper and nickel based) alloy melting and pouring processes
  • Practical sand casting foundry (or equivalent steel making facility) experience is highly recommended to be successful in performing this task.
  • Experience working on Department of Defense (DoD) products.
  • Experience with ProCAST (or equivalent) finite element analysis software for casting mold filling and solidification simulation modeling.
