The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) is an organization of over 2,200 personnel of which 700 serve at HQ and the remaining staff serve at offices worldwide. NCIS is the Department of Navy (DON) component with primary responsibility for criminal investigation, law enforcement (LE), counter-terrorism (CT), counterintelligence (CI), and cyber matters. NCIS not only has primary responsibility for all criminal investigative, CI, CT, and cyber matters within the DON, but it also has exclusive investigative jurisdiction in non-combat matters involving actual, potential, or suspected criminal, terrorism, sabotage, espionage, and subversive activities. NCIS is one of several DoD criminal investigative and intelligence organizations headquartered together at the Russell-Knox Building (RKB) aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA. Known collectively as Military Department Investigation Agencies (MDIA), the individual organizations include NCIS, Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency (DCSA), Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI), Army Criminal Investigation Command (CID), and Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). This position is part of the IT Technology Operations division within the NCIS ITD organization and performs the following responsibilities/functions:

  • Deploying MS SQL servers in highly available configurations via multiple SQL nodes
  • Setting up MS SQL Always On Availability Groups with multiple SQL server synchronization
  • Deploying HA/AOAG stretched over a metro style clustering for disaster recovery support
  • Performance tune DB and server connections
  • Upgrading DB to newer versioning via best practices
  • Working with MS SQL Transparent Data Encryption (TDE)
  • Securing Windows, MS SQL, and DBs per DoD guidance in RMF accredited environments
  • Patching servers and MS SQL installation during non-peak hours
  • Administering MS SQL Reporting Services and Power BI instances
  • Work with backup team to ensure user and system DBs have appropriate backups
  • Work with CND team to assist in providing log review for threat incidents
  • Assist in managing other SQL versions to include MySQL and PostgreSQL (PSQL)
  • Performs software upgrades, patch installs, firmware upgrades
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot problems related to the OS, hardware, network, and related software
  • Daily written and oral communications with coworkers and leadership
  • Continual attention to periodic SCAP and STIG requirements needed to harden the servers
  • Create scripts in various shells to automate daily and periodic tasks
  • Document work for leadership, update/create Standard Operating Procedures, and brief staff and customers various tasks

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in systems administration
  • 2+ years of specialized experience in MS SQL administration
  • Experienced with SQL Server 2012/2014/2016/+
  • Experienced with SQL administration via SQL Server Management Studio, CMS, as well as transact statements
  • Experienced with Windows Server 2012/2016/2019
  • Experienced with MS Power BI
  • Familiar working with Linux OS supporting MySQL PSQL instances
  • Familiar working with servers in a VMware virtual environment
  • Requires ability to work in a collaborative environment to troubleshoot and resolve problems
  • Required: Current DoD 8570 - IAT Level II
  • Required: Fully adjudicated active Top-Secret clearance is required to start, must be eligible to obtain SCI-level adjudication
