POSITION SUMMARY:

We are currently recruiting for a Trades Technician lll. The Trades Technician lll is responsible for performing a wide variety of advanced technical support for the VA Department of the Corrections, including but not limited to the maintenance and repair of the two-way radio system, which includes VHF, UHF, and 800 MHZ base station transmitters, receivers and related linking systems and related duties as assigned. This FULL-TIME position starts at $25.00 per hour and is a REMOTE position.

Must visit each institution at least quarterly, or as needed, to repair or recommend replacement of radios or components. Will be responsible for conducting annual inventories for all locations within their region. A state vehicle and fuel card will be provided for transportation

● Programs, adjusts, aligns, tests, and maintains radios and related electronic equipment using a wide variety of hand tools, computers, software, and test instruments.

● Installs and maintains radios and related system equipment located at remote radio sites throughout Virginia.

● Repairs and maintains battery chargers, electrical circuits, and related equipment that support the radio system.

● Provides daily problem resolution for various hardware and software problems related to the operation of the radio system and wireless services.

● Takes a lead role in diagnosing problems, troubleshooting electronic systems and equipment, and selecting and performing technical repairs at both system and component level.

● Operates and maintains digital and analog electronic test equipment working in shop and field settings.

● Orders parts and materials as necessary to maintain inventory for routine and emergency maintenance and repairs.

● Provides customer support assistance with technical questions related to operations of the radio system and related equipment.

● Assists with coordinating vendor and contractor service on tower mounted antennas, shelter equipment and standby power generators and wiring.

● Completes and maintains all equipment maintenance records required.

● Performs preventive maintenance using established testing procedures and prescribed schedule to ensure uninterrupted operation of radio system.

● The selected candidate will be responsible for the Eastern Region of Virginia.

● Candidates must reside in the region that he/she is assigned according to the DOC map.

● Participate in developing department goals, objectives, and systems

● Participate in staff meetings and attend other meetings and seminars as assigned.

● Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures, to continually improve efficiency of the department and services performed.

● Efficiently performs duties as assigned and works as a team within division and company.

● Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

● Excellent verbal, written, and listening communication skills within the English language.

● Proven, high quality customer service (internal and external customers).

● Ability to work collaboratively.

● Solid ability to analyze situations carefully and adopt appropriate courses of action.

● Ability to understand and adhere to the duties, methods, and procedures required by the position.

● Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Education and Experience:

● High school diploma or equivalent, preferred.

● Proficient in Microsoft Word

● Proficient in Microsoft Excel

● Experience with two-way radio communication

Physical Requirements:

● Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

● Must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds at times.

● Standard hours of work Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.

● Travel may be required up to 10% of the time.
