Museum Store Manager – Whatcom Museum (Bellingham)

The Whatcom Museum, located in Bellingham’s vibrant downtown Arts District, is looking for a Museum Store Manager to join our team!

We’re an accredited museum and a Smithsonian Affiliate, with three buildings featuring art, natural history, and Pacific Northwest history exhibits. Our store is a key part of our visitor experience and offers unique merchandise that supports our mission.

About the Position:

This is a 30-hour-per-week position (some flexibility required for evenings/weekends). Pay is $23–$25/hour, plus full benefits: PTO, 12 paid holidays, medical/dental insurance, and a SIMPLE IRA.

Job Duties:

- Source and purchase merchandise related to the museum’s exhibitions and programming.

- Maintain store inventory and manage relationships with vendors and local artists.

- Design and arrange merchandise displays, ensuring the store is clean and inviting.

- Cover the sales counter, assisting customers and handling transactions.

- Coordinate with museum staff on exclusive merchandise opportunities.

- Prepare reports and track key performance indicators.

- Provide excellent customer service and support the museum’s mission.

Qualifications:

- Degree in art, history, science, museum studies, business, or related field preferred.

- At least three years of retail experience (cash handling experience required).

- Experience with vendors and consignment sales is a plus.

- Must be detail-oriented, organized, and motivated, with strong communication skills.

- Proficiency in POS systems and Microsoft Excel/Word.

- Ability to work in a busy environment and lift up to 30 pounds.

- Must pass a background check and be willing to work occasional evenings/weekends.
