OverviewOur expert staff provide multi-disciplinary solutions to complex energy and environmental issues. Key capabilities include science (chemical and mechanical). We employ a systems perspective that includes, discovery technology development and scale-up as well as economic, regulatory, and market acceptance issues necessary for successful technology commercialization. EP&MD focuses on three mission contributions: Clean Fossil Energy, Electricity Infrastructure, & Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.ResponsibilitiesAre you an outstanding scientist with an emerging national reputation in the area of polymers and polymer composites? The Applied Materials & Manufacturing Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking a new team member to support and grow research programs in polymer and composite materials; polymer matrix-fiber interfacial chemistry; composite materials processing; and/or novel processing approaches. These materials may be used sustainable energy, high-strength lightweight materials for vehicles to reduce energy use in the nation’s transportation sector, or in other applications of interest to the Department of Energy.The candidate will lead research teams and develop and propose new ideas. He or she will provide technical direction to research projects, collaborate broadly with highly diverse researchers, manage project execution, and mentor junior staff. The position holder will participate in the larger technical community by authoring manuscripts for publication and presenting at (and organizing sessions at) national meetings. They will also be expected to originate and develop intellectual property that can be patented and licensed commercially.QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:

BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-

MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience -OR-

PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD in materials science or engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field with 5 years of industrial or research laboratory experience, or MS/MA with 3 years of similar experience

An emerging professional reputation for technical expertise and technical leadership within the field

Experience as principal investigator on projects or tasks

Experience in proposal writing

A creative spirit and curiosity to ask questions to understand materials behavior mechanistically

Demonstrated record of publication in top-tier journals and an ability to collaborate and lead within a teaming environment.

Experience in the sustainable energy, automotive or aerospace sector

With qualifications of that caliber, we prefer subject matter expertise in the following areas:

Polymer and composite materials, recyclability, or biodegradability, or in matrix-fiber interfacial chemistry

Industrially scalable composites processing approaches, such as compression molding, pultrusion, HP-RTM, , prepreg development, composite preforming, and in state-of-the-art high speed molding processes

Composite design and modeling

Melt processing experience in injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming, and compounding

Polymeric and elastomeric materials characterization, such as DSC, TGA, TEM, SEM, DMA, tribology, FTIR, NMR, and other tools

Polymer and elastomer materials processes in both thermoplastic and thermosetting materials

Hazardous Working Conditions/EnvironmentThe staff member will work in research laboratories, which are inherently hazardous working environments.
