We are seeking a passionate, experienced design leader with a deep understanding of human centered design to promote design innovation for a wide range of projects and clients. As a Design Director, you will approach your work from a multidisciplinary, holistic perspective and guide your teams by playing an integral role in translating business objectives and customer needs into compelling, elegant, and engaging experiences. This Design Director role requires 8+ years of experience working in the digital product design space.
  • Responsibilities:As part of design leadership, the Design Director will help define the direction, style, and execution of Smashing Ideas' design processes. They will collaborate with a variety of teams to transform our clients' business needs into human-centered solutions that drive value for business and their users. Experience and skill in interaction design, user research, and leadership is essential. Design Team Leadership:• Lead projects and participate in proposals, Smashing Ideas Design Team vision and leadership, hiring and growth, and outreach• Model the behavior that demonstrates our values - Create with Heart, Keep It Real, Paddle Out, Raise the Fun Flag, Ride-or-Die, and Stay Curious - as well as working out loud, assuming good intent, and being armor-off• Guide, nurture, and manage direct report designers; be a mentor and an advocate for career growth and success for all designers• Evolve the Design Team's philosophies, methodologies, processes, techniques, tools, and share and teach them throughout Smashing Ideas• Help shape proposals and estimating project work effort to apply human-centered design methodologies to satisfy client needs• Be active in the local design community by sharing knowledge, presenting at meetups or design and networking events, and engaging with outside talent toto promote Smashing Ideas wok and culture On Projects:• Plan and choreograph workshops, design activities and deliverables for projects and proposals, often including creative briefs, journey maps, personas and archetypes, design concepts and explorations, visual mood boards, flows, wireframes, prototypes (low-medium-high fidelities), visual comps and assets, and design language systems• Plan staffing needs to balance individuals' passions and growth needs, project outcomes, team chemistries, client constraints, and project goals• Facilitate the collaborative creation of the project vision, and use the vision as a guiding tool to ensure alignment and excellence• Partner with strategy, research, development, and program management leads to ensure solutions are delivered on schedule and deliver real value (including fiscal, experience, and brand value) to users, clients, and Smashing Ideas• Inspire and support designers to create world-class, innovative design across all design facets including UX, information architecture, interaction, motion, animation and UI that supports and reinforces the product vision, brand and business objectives• Be a player-coach - be an individual contributor as needed to cover, strengthen, and inspire teams to do their best work in any facet of projects including design research, workshops, ideation, interaction, UX/UI, prototyping, usability testing, asset production, and delivery• Partner with key client stakeholders to ensure their engagement, contribution, and success
  • Mandatory Skills Description:• 8+ years of design experience (preferably in an agency or client services environment)• 3+ years managing creative/design teams• A portfolio that demonstrates your expertise in creating stellar digital products and services• A passion for ideation, exploration and problem-solving• A willingness to challenge employees to excel in his or her own way• An awareness that their own beliefs and filters, as well as that of others, can be limiting and a willingness to challenge assumptions• Actively seeks critique of work and ideas as opportunities for improvement• A user centered design approach to user engagement• Seeks ambiguity since it is rife with opportunity• Can jump out to the 10,000-mile view and tackle big assumptions, then zoom back down to the details and make sure everything fits together sensibly. Sees the big picture and sweats the details• Can effectively present work to clients, internal teams, and executives for review and feedback• Can clearly communicate and articulate design intent and rationale with compelling reasoning and research• Can write well, as it pertains to behavioral archetypes, experience narratives, directional copy, and other related artifacts• A desire to develop bi-directional, inspirational relationships with clients and teammates• BFA or BA in Design, related field or equivalent professional experience
