We’re seeking an IT professional to fulfill a DevOps Engineer position within our Cloud & Platform Engineering team to further support our goals. This is a group with Sentry’s Technology and Infrastructure Services organization that has a diverse set of responsibilities and complementary skills across several internal teams. In this role, your core responsibilities will include researching, installation, maintenance, performance, and support of critical application and data delivery platforms that enable the company’s IT operations. A significant focus will be on automation of many of the core tasks associated with these responsibilities.

Centralized platform teams are responsible for selecting, building, and supporting a curated universe of platform and infrastructure tooling aligned around a core set of guiding principles and practices. Platform infrastructure (compute, storage, traffic management, data), logs/metrics, security, and workflow orchestration are the building blocks for a modern application delivery pipeline. In this position you will have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of technologies and work closely with infrastructure and application teams across the entire IT organization.

This position can be filled as a DevOps Administrator, Engineer, or Senior Engineer based on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience.

This position may be staffed in either our Stevens Point, WI or Madison, WI office.

What You'll Do

As a DevOps Engineer at Sentry, you’ll focus on providing streamlined orchestration capabilities and expertise on shared solutions that allow engineers across Sentry IT to build, test, deploy, observe, secure, and operate their systems. DevOps engineers innovate on the platform so that application teams can innovate on business solutions. In addition, you’ll:

  • Continually evaluate the platforms we support for potential improvement. Create standards and guardrails to simplify the processes by which our internal IT customers interact with them. Enable automation or provide self-service, programmable interfaces whenever possible.

  • Collaborate in a team environment that insists on the highest standards. Challenge yourself, your team, and the company to learn and grow with a focus on reaching maximum potential.

  • Regularly engage with application development teams to provide technical direction and guidance in automating application and infrastructure deployments.

  • Investigate and aid other infrastructure service areas when troubleshooting service delivery or performance issues.Assure a high level of platform availability provide prompt problem resolution. Participate (as needed) in on-call rotations to provide 24/7 support for critical infrastructure and platforms.

  • Partner with Sentry’s Information Security team to actualize security concepts and best practices in the platforms we deliver. Strive for secure by default, at scale.

  • Drive to deliver a great user experience with intuitive products and solutions. Gather and implement customer feedback, understanding industry trends, continuous learning, and build in quality.

  • Act as an effective steward of Sentry IT’s infrastructure resources. Evaluate new features or solutions with a cost-conscious mindset. Research and recommend options to deliver the same or better platforms more efficiently - recognizing tradeoffs between operational tech debt and expense.

What it Takes

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience; degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field preferred

  • Experience in at least one major scripting technology (e.g. Python, Powershell, Ruby) and able to leverage these skills to automate repeatable tasks; coding experience in .NET or Java is beneficial

  • Knowledge of industry standards and direction, and the mindset of a lifelong learner with an eye towards continuous improvement and a desire to innovate

  • Experience in Cloud (AWS) computing is highly desired

  • Strong technical, analytical, and communication skills

  • Empathy and listening – ability to understand the perspectives of your colleagues and customers

  • Within the Cloud and Platform Engineering group we make use of a wide range of technologies and while no one is expected to know them all; experience administering any of the following platforms is highly desired:

    • Windows & Linux (particularly RHEL, CentOS, and AWS Linux) Servers

    • RabbitMQ, Elasticsearch, Redis

    • HTTP load balancers (AWS ALB/ELB in particular),

    • Performance management tools such asDynatrace

    • Workflow & Collaboration Tooling - BMC Control-M, Docker, Atlassian Products (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, Opsgenie)

    • Continuous integration/continuous deployment solutions such as Jenkins, Artifactory, SonarQube

    • Infrastructure-as-Code tooling (e.g. Chef, Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible)
