Freight Coordinator

In operation since 1928, Harmer Steel Products is a leading distributor of railroad rail and track materials. We currently have an excellent opportunity at our headquarters in the Linnton neighborhood of NW Portland, Oregon. We are looking for a freight coordinator/administrative assistant to support our USA sales staff.

Duties:

a) Coordinate and manage freight transportation activities for the company

b) Assist the USA sales and procurement teams to obtain freight rates (motor freight including LTL/FTL flatbeds and vans, blind shipments, overlength, railcars, transloading, intermodal, parcel)

c) Work closely with vendors, shippers, and team members to obtain load details ranging from a UPS box to numerous railroad carloads of material

d) Communicate with customers and colleagues to coordinate shipment delivery requirements

e) Arrange and book freight transportation based on variable shipment requirements

f) Compose and transmit load sheets/rate confirmations to freight brokers and/or company drivers

g) Prepare and distribute bills of lading for all shipments

h) Oversee tracking of loads (motor freight, railcar, etc.) to ensure deliveries are on schedule

i) Review all freight invoices for accuracy, and work with freight reps if discrepancies occur

j) Keep track of, assist with negotiations, and update the team regarding changes to freight carrier policies and fees

k) Log updates to Harmer’s supplier and customer databases

l) Miscellaneous administrative tasks

Requirements:

a) Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to identify and correct mathematical errors

b) Exceptional and efficient communication skills (both written and verbal)

c) Ability to work 40 hours per week in the office with dependable attendance

d) Ability to sit, stand, or a combination of both for 8 hours a day

e) Ability to move throughout the office to distribute shipping paperwork

f) Ability to climb one flight of stairs to access company break room and conference room

g) Ability to look at computer monitors and use multi-line phone system continuously throughout the work shift

l) Candidates with freight, trucking, dispatching, and/or logistics coordination experience preferred, but not required

The compensation for this position ranges from $22.00 to $25.00 per hour depending on experience
