Project manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing fabrication and welding projects from bid handoff through completion. The Project Manager serves as the primary liaison between customers, engineers, shop supervisors, and field personnel.
Key Responsibilities
Project Planning & Execution
Manage multiple welding and fabrication projects simultaneously from kickoff to closeout.
Review drawings, specifications, and contracts to develop accurate project plans.
Create and maintain project schedules, budgets, and manpower plans.
Coordinate material procurement, subcontractors, and outside services.
Shop & Field Coordination
Work closely with shop foremen, welders, and fabricators to prioritize workloads
Coordinate shop fabrication and field installation activities
Resolve fabrication issues, design conflicts, and schedule impacts
Quality Control & Compliance
Ensure work complies with customer specifications and job specs.
Review welding procedures (WPS), welder qualifications, and inspection requirements.
Coordinate inspections, testing, and documentation
Review and understand Coating Reqs.
Cost & Change Management
Track labor hours, material costs, and job profitability
Manage change orders, RFIs, and scope adjustments
Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality or safety
Safety Leadership
Promote a strong safety culture among shop and field personnel
Participate in job safety meetings and incident investigations
Customer & Communication Management
Serve as primary point of contact for customers and stakeholders
Provide regular project updates, schedules, and status reports
Address customer concerns and ensure satisfaction
Documentation & Closeout
Maintain accurate project records, drawings, and reports
Ensure timely project closeout, including as-built drawings and turnover documents
Qualifications
Required
3–7 years of experience in welding, fabrication, or industrial construction project management
Strong understanding of welding processes (MIG, TIG, Stick, FCAW) and fabrication methods
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and specifications
Knowledge of AWS codes, OSHA regulations, and general fabrication standards
Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
Knowledge of structural steel fabrication and erection.
Preferred
Experience with structural steel, piping, pressure vessels, or industrial fabrication.
Proficiency with project management and estimating software
Supervisory or foreman experience in a fabrication environment
Strong computer and organizational skills
Work Environment
Combination of office, shop floor, and occasional jobsite visits
Exposure to welding, cutting, grinding, and fabrication operations
May require extended hours to meet project deadlines
May be asked to jump in anywhere at any time to assist other team members
