Shop Mechanic

Position Summary

As an experienced Shop Mechanic, you will be responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing diesel trucks and heavy-duty vehicles in our fleet. This position requires hands-on technical expertise to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems while ensuring the fleet operates efficiently and complies with safety regulations. You will also assist with preventative maintenance to reduce vehicle downtime and contribute directly to the reliability of our operations.

Essential Duties

Perform repairs on diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, electrical systems, brakes, and air conditioning units.

Diagnose mechanical issues using diagnostic equipment and execute repairs for optimal vehicle performance.

Conduct routine preventative maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacements, and inspections, to extend equipment lifespan.

Complete pre- and post-repair vehicle inspections for compliance with FMCSA and DOT standards.

Disassemble engines to inspect parts for defects and excessive wear.

Recondition and replace parts such as pistons, bearings, gears, valves, and bushings using hand tools and precision instruments.

Utilize welding techniques as needed to repair or fabricate parts.

Operate hand and power tools safely to complete repairs.

Troubleshoot and repair after-treatment systems and perform software updates as necessary.

Conduct tire changes, brake adjustments, and fluid level checks to maintain safety standards.

Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, and company safety regulations during repairs.

Maintain a clean and organized work environment to support operational efficiency.

Regular and predictable attendance is a fundamental requirement for this position, as it is essential for maintaining operational continuity, fostering effective teamwork, and upholding safety standards. Consistent presence enables the timely completion of repairs and projects, ensuring we meet customer commitments and maintain the high-quality service our clients expect.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Address driver-reported defects (DVIR) promptly, documenting all repairs before vehicles are returned to service.

Diagnose and repair complex issues on diesel trucks, including engine, transmission, and electrical failures, to minimize downtime.

Respond swiftly to emergency breakdowns, providing efficient repairs to quickly return vehicles to service.

Maintain detailed repair logs and communicate maintenance needs with the Shop Manager to enhance fleet reliability.

Work with the Shop Manager to prioritize and schedule repairs based on operational needs.

Collaborate with the parts department to account for inventory and ensure timely availability of supplies.

Train and mentor less experienced mechanics, fostering skill development and adherence to safety standards.

Maintain accurate maintenance records, including work orders and parts usage, to support fleet reliability.

Ensure compliance with FMCSA, DOT, and OSHA regulations during repairs to support safety initiatives.

Operate shop tools and equipment safely, utilizing diagnostic software effectively.

Collaborate with the parts department to communicate inventory needs for smooth operations and timely repairs.

Perform additional duties as assigned to support operational objectives.

By performing repairs, conducting regular maintenance, and maintaining detailed records, you will contribute to the company’s ability to meet operational goals while prioritizing a safe working environment.

Your expertise will minimize vehicle downtime, extend the life of the fleet, and ensure compliance with DOT regulations, thereby protecting both the company and its drivers from costly fines and breakdowns. Your commitment to safety will enhance the overall performance and efficiency of our operations.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum of 3 years of experience working as a mechanic on diesel trucks or heavy equipment.

Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, hydraulic systems, transmissions, electrical systems, air brakes, and basic wiring.

Hands-on experience with preventative maintenance and inspections on diesel trucks.

Ability to use diagnostic software and tools (e.g., Paccar DAVIE4, Cummins Insite).

In-depth knowledge of DOT regulations and familiarity with federal and state safety regulations related to trucking.

Strong knowledge of FMCSA and DOT safety regulations related to vehicle maintenance.

Working knowledge of hand tools and power tools is required.

Valid driver’s license required; Class A CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) is preferred.

Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test in compliance with DOT regulations / company policy.

Dependable attendance and a strong work ethic.

Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 lbs., frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs., and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 lbs. with assistance.

Self-motivated and capable of working independently without requiring regular management oversight.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with after-treatment systems and troubleshooting advanced vehicle systems, including the use of diagnostic software (e.g., Paccar DAVIE4, Cummins Insite, Bendix Acom) for effective diagnostics and updates.

Vocational or technical certification in diesel engine repair or heavy equipment mechanics.

Familiarity with FMCSA compliance audits and DOT inspections, ensuring awareness of regulatory requirements to support fleet compliance and align repair work with safety standards.

CDL is a plus, but not required; as it allows for test driving heavy-duty vehicles post-repair, ensuring accurate diagnostics and quality control.

Clean driving record as reflected in an MVR over the past three (3) years, with no serious traffic violations or major preventable accidents.

Desired Attributes

Commitment to safety protocols and ensuring a safe working environment.

Strong organizational skills to maintain accurate maintenance records and collaborate closely with the parts department to ensure timely ordering, availability, and proper management of parts inventory, supporting efficient workflow in the shop.

Excellent communication skills for working with the Shop Manager and fleet drivers.

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within the shop team.

Ability to stay updated on industry advancements and emerging technologies in diesel truck repair, ensuring continuous improvement and adaptation to new tools and techniques.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Vocational certification in diesel mechanics or automotive technology preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy parts (up to 50 pounds), standing, kneeling, bending, and working in various positions for extended periods, as well as the ability to work in various weather conditions and confined spaces.
